Tool Man - Does your brake light come on as soon as you pull the front brake lever? Mine does not. I have to pull it a fair amount before the light comes on, but that's a LOT of braking. Most of my commuting never involves braking that hard - so my brake light would never come. I swapped bikes with my brother for about 15 miles the other day and the whole time I was following him, the light never lit either... kinda scary because the front brakes grab immediately... and with no light. I've been using the rear brake too just to be sure I get a light so nobody runs me over. I looked briefly at the switch on the lever, but couldn't tell if it's adjustable right away. I'll probably dig deeper into that tonight.

Now that is scary indeed, please keep us updated on that. Last thing I need is an car enema...

There's one screw that holds the light switch on, but it's so cramped under there, I can't tell if the switch can be re-positioned. Damn I wish I could get a maintenance manual...

Guys, it was unseasonably cool in Vegas during our testing... 60's most of the time with a VERY stiff wind.
We also had leather pants and boots...I personally didn't feel any unreasonable heat.

I have a Streetbike break-in procedure we have used for years:

Streetbike Break-In

Of course your new bike will have already been heat-cycled at the factory. Most of the information new 14 owners will be interested in revolve around how we ride the new bikes during the break-in period. Kawasaki might not agree, but this is exactly how we broke in our new 14 and it is making GREAT power!

Happy reading,

Brock

The heat and, bewleive it or not, the gas mileage issue bother me. I don't have to get great, but I want to average at least high 30's for regular riding. The heat is unacceptable. Please keep updates coming.

Thanks.

I looked at the owners manual, it talks about adjusting the brake light switches. Unfortunately, it says that the front brake light switch is not adjustable... but the rear is.

I think the plunger is just a little plastic thing. I may see about getting a small file in there to make it a bit shorter.

Yeah, that mileage hasn't impressed me yet either. My ZZR got 36 or so during break-in, and I regularly average 38-42 for combined hard driving and commuting. I was hoping for at least the high 30's from this bike. I hope it gets better. The first oil change is FAST approaching, so that'll probably help too.

I'm sure the stealer can adjust that easily. I have had many HD's with the same issues and they were always a snap to fix.

My 'Busa got great gas mileage when I was just toodling around w/the wife. I saw upwards of 60 mpg whilst on a trip to the mountains. I was rarely above 4K rpm's and fairly steady-state cruising, but still! I averaged low-mid 40's. GT bike has to have it all for me.

Rarely above 4K? No wonder. I'm quite sure the 14 wil get close to the same mileage once broken in...especially at 4K. I'm never under 4K, usually around 6+ --much higher though on the liter bikes...But I've never seen 60MPG on a performance bike, especially with 2 up. That's better than a Jetta diesel man!

zerMATT,
Did you put a pipe on the bike yet and if so did it make any difference in the heat issue?

No pipe, I'll probably stay with stock. I might do cans just for the sound, but I don't want to make any changes if it'll reduce the low end at all.

Mods so far:
Removed rear seat cowl
Adjusted front brakelight switch

Coming soon:
Techmounts control mount for V1 radar locator
Crank in some front & rear preload

Yeh, the mpg was way cool. Never got that high again. Saw the 50's on a number of occasions. Just for accuracy sake: I wasn't riding two-up on the bike. The wife was on her on bike. Hence, the slow speeds...

Shit, the only reason I was getting a '14 was to save gas. Now I hear the mileage is worse than my wife's 50cc Yamaha Vino scooter? Why won't it get as good as gas mileage as as 4 1/2 horsepower scooter?

not sure why people are talking about mileage... I was pretty clear about what the bike got when I rode it.. provided both "riding it casual" and "hammering on it" figures... didya nut read da review?

Whine, whine, whine . . . try 10 mpg, or less, around town and MAYBE 18 on the freeway on my Boss. Driving around town I often had to stop every 65 miles 'cause there was no-way-in-hell, I was going to run out of gas on a 1400 lb. bike. I don't have enough miles to give any indication what the actual fuel economy on the 14 will be but it already looks like 35+ around town and much higher on the road. I'm likin' this thing a whole LOT, thanks for all the input!
