ZX14 Brake Check
I spent some time yesterday on a ZX14, not your average ZX14 though...

I was helping out as a test rider for some more ABS brake testing. The bike had a ton of instruments attached.

We tested the ABS in the wet and dry and it worked very well. We also tested without the ABS in the wet and the dry.
It's nice to have these ...

...when you're testing the brakes on wet sealer.

I really like the ZX14. It has great power and the ergos are very good. I can say for sure the brakes are REAL good. They have great power and feel and did not fade at all during a bunch of hard stops.

That actually looks good without them...of course with some touch up treatments for the bolt holes and whatnot. How long you think before some aftermarket company puts out different replacement panels for the side strakes?

The other thing that looks good is painting the bellypan to match. I did this in Photoshop and it looks very nice.

On this subject (sorry bout the semi-threadjack Stu - you know where I live if we need ta "talk" ) but I'm wonderin why the 14 uses the Nissin calipers and not the Tokico's?
Better heat dissipation, less caliper flex, sumthin ta do with the ABS???

so why dont they ever test the ABS on rippled/ uneven surfaces? That tends to be the weakness in my experience.

My guess is that the above testin is calibration.
Problem is that the ABS reads wheel speed regardless of contact with the ground - until someone finds a way to program the ABS to operate in conjunction with the suspension then that anomaly will be present.
For that ta happen it would seem that active suspension would need to be in place - I don't think we wanna go there on bikes (do we?).
The linked brake system Honda had didn't seem to sit well with lotsa the go fast crowd so how well would a linked brake via the suspension system operate?
ABS on a bike to me is like 4 wheel drive on a vehicle out here in SoCal - sure you can get yerself into a spot where ya NEED the 4WD but more than likely, 99% of yer driving is gonna be perfectly fine in 2WD.
I feel the braking is the same - I adjust my riding style to conditions as they occur. Sure I could be caught unawares, then that would be the 1% of riding that the ABS would be beneficial for me.
Having said all that, there's no way I could dispute what Stu says bout this systems operation on a street bike - I can't think of a better professional that I'd take a recommendation from.
That's my opinion(s).

ABS with on/odd swtich
wet surface: ON!
non-asphalt round with sand on surface:OFF
racing: OFF
...
BMW is developing a more refined ABS,
which should be on procuction 2008
I may buy a BMW R1200RT after all
