A monster Busa ready to pounce on the ZX14

New Hayabusa May Pack Six-Cylinder Power

By Dirck J. Edge

In my article a few weeks ago about the hyper-touring class, I mentioned persistent rumors that Suzuki had been developing a new Hayabusa for release as a 2006 model, before deciding to hold off til 2007 and then hit the market with a machine whose sole purpose is to blow Kawasaki's new ZX-14 right out of the water.

When you paint a target on the back of a bike like the ZX-14, which makes almost 200 flywheel horsepower and offers incredible performance, you better bring a big gun if you're hoping to win the shootout. What kind of big gun is Suzuki loading for 2007? Only their engineers know for sure, but rumor says it might be a six-shooter - that is, an inline six-cylinder motor.

Back in December, when I wrote about the six-cylinder Stratosphere concept bike Suzuki showed at the Tokyo Motor Show, I mentioned Suzuki's recent propensity for turning concept bikes into production models, and speculated that the Stratosphere might be a preview of Suzuki's intentions to build a six-cylinder production bike in the near future. Such a move would certainly be an attention-grabber in a market over-saturated with inline four-cylinders, and what better place to direct that attention than a range-topping model like the Hayabusa?

In addition to the publicity benefits, a six-cylinder Hayabusa would have practical advantages as well. If you check back to my article about different engine configurations in MotoGP, you'll find an in-depth explanation of why a motor with more cylinders can make more horsepower with the same displacement and level of tune. The bottom line is, a 1300cc inline-six could very easily make 220hp at the crank, and the possibility of even higher output definitely exists. In a class where horsepower and acceleration rule, we can't see where Suzuki could go wrong with a six-cylinder Hayabusa.

Too wide, they should look into a V configuration to keep the bike narrow.

I find it hard to believe they'd do a six banger. But, who knows. This is the stuff that keeps it interesting.
Seems it would be wiiiiide, killing aeros??

I've been reading the same speculation in MCN. Not having a crystal ball I wouldn't bet my house on it. One thing though, if Suzuki and Kawasaki go to war trying to outdo each other in the Hyperbike class there's only going to be one winner.

That's us, the consumer.

I agree. A 60 degree V6 with perfect primary balance and great sound.

Bob's right we would be the only winners, just makes you wonder though,if they did come out with a six cylinder and it was light and slim, how many of us would jump ship?

I would. Was always intrigued by the 6 cylinder bikes, aka. Benelli Seis (750), Honda CBX, Kaw KZ1300, even the Valkyrie.

The bigger question for me is "will it handle?" I think the ZX-14 excites a lot of people because it handles *and* goes fast. Not something the 'busa could claim.

Will this new "super busa" be just another straight line bike? Or will Suzi make an attempt at a go-fast bike that not only does well in the quarter, but also does well in the twisties?

Only time will tell...

It's all good anyway. Competition is what keeps these beasts alive. I'll buy a ZX-14 now, and in 4-6 years when Kawi comes out with it's next "hyper tourer", I'll be ready for a change

Boss Hoss's are made in Dyersburg TN. Stop in for a tour if you're ever in the neighborhood, it's pretty cool. I rode a 355-powered one this past summer and that squelched any thoughts of actually owning one. Yuck.

My wife and I have two of them with 502 (8.2 liter) big block Chevys. Mine is a 2 wheeler with 500 hp and hers is a trike with NOS (2x20lb bottles with bottle warmers), wheelie bars, and Hoosier racing tires. They are fun cruisers but mine lacks traction for full power below 80 mph but hers is just fookin' evil. Some pics are at:

No digital ones and it is hiding (kinda buried) in another garage under a bike cover. When it was a few hours old we took it all apart and painted it black and metalic gold in a Yahama "Midnight Special" theme. IMAO it is the nicest V-Max I've ever seen. I'll see if I can take some pictures 'cuse my wife would like it to simply leave the stable since it isn't going to be used . . . too many other bikes and military vehicles (tanks 'n' sh#t). She doesn't know about my lust for a ZX-14 . . .

Oops... sorry to open that can'o'worms on ya! My paychecks used to come from Redmond, so I tend to notice that location a bit quicker than most .

Don't hold it against me though, that was over 10 years ago now

Well one of these days... when you decide to send it on its way to it's next home, give me a ring, not sure if I will be able to afford her but let me get a shot at her.... There have been only 3 bikes in my life of 38 years that I have totally lusted after!!! a 1985 Yamaha V-Max. A 2000 Kawasaki ZX-12R (that dream came true) and any year MV Agusta!! (this one I hope to buy when I turn 40)....

There is a guy here in town that has an 85. sitting in his garage, I was in the bar one night and had some extra cash and offered him 3 grand right on the bar and he would not take it... the bike is just sitting there, and he does not even ride I think it had 2000 miles on it... maybe one of these days he will take me up on my offer, but finding the day when I have the extra $$ and he wants to sell it might be a trick...

A six would cost ALOT, have NO bottom end power and cost the owners a fortune for service, parts, and accessories. Who's gonna buy a $2000 pipe ? I talked to the marketing guy at Kawasaki about a busa retalliation, He says yeh but we're READY for that ,also !
