ZX14 and maintenance

On the Motorcycle daily they said that the bike has CAN-system. Was there any talking about the bikes maintenance. I mean intervals and such but also do You need a special reader to access the fault codes or does it still has what the previous Kawaskis had - so You can read the codes with just grounding one wire from ECU. Well maybe we have to wait till Service manual comes awailable. But was there any talking about service or did You see a owners manual?

if i remember correctly, CAN does not necessarily effect how you interface with the ECU. the idea of CAN is just that instead of running a wire between the power source/switch and each load (sensors, lights), you run a single power wire (that is always on), and a control wire that carries signals just like a computer network. those signals are read by all the loads attached to the wires and it instructs which load shoudl do what. for example, instead of running a wire from the power thru the fuse box thru the brake switch to teh tail light, you have the brake switch send a signal over the network that tells the taillight to turn on, at which point the switch at the tail light turns on the juice frmo the global power line.

You mean the Drive Computer (or what ever it is in English)
reads the brake signal and then switches on the tail light?

Yes I know how bus works and know that it don't neccesary mean that they have changed the system but with CAN You could get much more information so they may have gone to a wiser system. Just hope they have still left the everymans method! Or I hope that they would have gone the OBD2 route like cars because I allready have a scanner for those. Just hope that it isin't something only KHI can support.

And VPN basically Yes but not neccesary everything is included in the CAN or as in cars there are different CAN systems for different things. Fastest being motor control, with ABS and ESP. One slower for all the convienience like air conditioning, electric windows, lighting etc. Probably the bike has only one for the engine management or then two with separate buses for engine and all the other like lightning etc.

Interesting what they can do these days. Error codes and computer diagnostics are everywhere.
I took a very new Triumph Daytona 675 out for a road test a few weeks ago, doing an editorial for a newspaper. The mechanic reminded me that they can read what revs and speed you did. That should encourage owners to observe the break in proceedure!!

Revs & speed... interesting. I wonder if that information will be available on the 14? If it is, I wonder if it's something that only service departments will know, or if the procedure will be published in the service manual...
