BEEYOOTEEFULL BAJA!
...WELL!...you interpid DualSportZone moderator has returned from his first ever and awesome 2-day trip into Baja Mexico...out of the 270 miles we covered in Baja, 105 of those were off-road (some with great natural difficulties that required technical savvy and good judgement)...and the pavement sections were a sportbikers dream (lots of curves and mostly empty of cages)...
...almost everything...I mean almost EVERYTHING that Mother Nature has available for your enjoyment in Baja, except snow and hail these past two days, were thrown at me and my riding buddies...no crashes...a few near crashes by your's truely ...and we all came out in one piece with me a more experienced and appreciative off-road rider...so much to learn...so many more trips to experience...
...I was in the company of two great off-road mentors and now, two great men of whom I'm honored to call 'friends' or 'mi amigos!'
...check this thread later for more info and a few pics...for those of you who have been there...you know what I'm takin' about!

...an excerpt I wrote on another off-road forum about my ride into Baja:
I just got back from a 2-day trip into Baja with two very off-road experienced friends, all three of us on KLR650s. About 270 miles total and a little less than half of that off-road. The pavement sections were smooth, curvy, and empty! Off-road was even more empty!
I didn't know squat about off-road techniques on the first day, didn't ask, struggled big time, and just kept it upright somehow. It was great, but only because I didn't crash and ruin it for everyone.
On the second day, I asked and recieved some advice. I also began experimenting with technique. Much more fun and much more enjoyable. Having experienced riders around who were willing to share and wait is everything for a newbie. Listen. Absorb. Apply. Relax.
The most fun and most terrifying moment was when we came upon a lane-wide deep sand wash about 30~40(?) yards long with scrub and cactus on the sides. I was already at speed(?) (15~20mph?), scooted far back on the seat, and relaxed my arms. Applied the mantra: Relax, keep your speed up, let it float over, and ferchrissakesdon'tchopthethrottle!
The bike wiggled, then oscillated, then dug in, then wagged even more, my mind was battling between chopping the throttle and stopping because the wags were beyond anything I've experienced, throttle up, bike digs in, more speed, more wag, tense arm, loose arm, pucker phactor, I wanted to cry, scrub and cactus taunting me, kept the speed up, and finally made it to the other side...laughed like a complete idiot buffoon when it was all over...and I actually liked it!
I left Baja a more appreciative and experienced off-road rider...and it can only get better with time...
I'll post some pics soon...I didn't take many pics...looks like I'll have to return there soon for some pics, huh?
