I spent 2 hours trying to kick a BMW R100 one day. I know how it can get. I'm assuming you have spark, gas, proper mixture and throttle set up. Try the following, it works on my XR650R every time. Of course it is a Honda which you should of purchased in the first place.
Does the DR have a decompression release? If so push the kicker until she don't wanna go no more. Then pull in that decomper and give the kick starter just a small nudge to get over the hump. Let go of the decomper, and kick right through to the bottom. DON'T TOUCH THE THROTTLE! Until you get a couple of tickovers keep you paws off it.
Good luck.
