Miles to go before I sleep....

oh oh

...I went to meet JATO on his KLR for a short ride...just passed a couple of cars going up a grade...60~65 mph on a new 200mile KLR650...just as I clear the cars, the bike's engine stops running...not a sieze...just silence...

...I instinctively pull the clutch lever in and coast to a stop...try to re-start...it cranks over but is not igniting...check gas...there's fuel in the tank (this is still from the first fill-up after I picked up the bike from the dealer a few days ago and I've only gone 210 miles so far...I should have at least another 70+miles on that tank of gas, but its low, not quite 'reserve'...I switch to reserve anyway...nothing...

...pushed uphill (UGH!) to a call-box about a mile away (YEA CALL BOXES!!! )...called JATO and he picked me and the bike up (side note: Dino once told me to always carry a pair of soft-straps in case of emergency...I went overboard and had a CanyonDancer handlebar strap with me as well...THANKS FOR THE TIP, DINO! )..loaded up the bike and took it to JATO's house...

...try to start...no start...checked the float bowl...very little fuel piddles out...removed the left cover and checked for pinched vacuum lines...none...disconnected the vacuum line...THE BIKE STARTS! ...took the bike to the dealer cuz' there's a coolant leak from somewhere and they needed to replace a the headlight fairing and gas-cap...

...unloaded the bike at the dealer and IT STARTS UP:/...the dealership owner starts working on it and we gotta jet outta there (but not before checking out the Z1000, KX500, and straddling the KLX400 )...haven't heard from them yet...

...Any ideas why bike bike dropped dead like that?...can't have that happening too far from homebase, ya' know???

...not a happy camper

yes.... if you ever "run out" of gas like that you should tip it all the way to the right as far as you can and then left for a few seconds as the petcock is only on one side and gas get's trapped on the other..

moving into a truck prolly sloshed it around.

...that's what I sort of figured, but there was enough gas on the petcock side where it shouldn't have done that (and in the schematic of the fuel delivery system in the Kawasaki Owner's Manual its actually labeled as "cock"..those funny Japanese, I tell ya' )...and I did indeed tip the bike to the left...still wouldn't ignite...you may be right, tho...you are, after all, the fishgod

sounds electrical to me. Get the dealer to check out the sidestand safety switch. I unhooked mine cos KLRs had a history of the switches failing. The motor would just stop as it "thought" the side stand was down.

Running out of fuel on the KLR. Mine would give some warning like a miss etc. You just had enough time to switch it on reserve before the engine would sputter to a halt, except if you had winter gloves on, which made it almost impossible to turn the petcock.

Just rummaging around the garage and I found 2 new Emgo oil filters for the KLR. Don't know if you want to use Emgo in your bike but if you do, I can give them to someone who's going to Laguna if they have room.

...thanks for the info Dirtybill, I'll tell them (I would think they would know how to diagnose these things, but as the dealer once told me, us enthusiasts tend to know more about our bikes than they do...how goofy is that?)...I guess they don't have time to 'get intimate' with the bikes...and NO!, I'm not sticking my pee-pee in that exhaust no matter how much I like my bikes

...so, you're going to be at Laguna?...I know you told me to pay postage and its mine (cool!), but if you show up there I'll take them off your hand...and I get to meet the famous Dirty one, cool?
