...thanks!...I went out and bought a new 03' KLR650...sweet!...went out with JATO and his 03'KLR650 up the Nate Harrison Grade (a county manitained dirt road on the south side of Palomar Mountain, elevation 6500+ft, steep, some switchbacks, but mostly 'easy')...
...my very first off-road-dirt-capable bike and my very first dirt ride (last year's impromptu-off-the-road-on-my-back-with-my-12R-on-top-of-me doesn't count )...got the bike all dirty and I'm not washing it for awhile ...WHAT A frEEkin' BLAST!!!! ...the perfect bike for frEEk, imho
...what's really a bonus cool is when I'm stopped at a traffic light and I can look eye-to-eye at the gorgeous ladies in their HummerH2s and say, "..hey...wannna get dirty?...." HEY!...I can dream! , but what a kewl bike to have!
...LOL...I DID have a first-aid kit with me...LOL, that's too funny!

Glad you like it. Without gettin corny, I think true freedom on a bike means you can go just about anywhere. If that means sacrificing some (ok, lots) of thrills via horsepower on the street, so be it.
I just found a 1996 back issue of Cycle Canada with a test of my bike in it. The bike is nerve wracking to ride off road because its so friggin tall. CC had the same problem. They raised the fork tubes 15 mm and backed off all the way on rear preload for a 155 pound rider and it seemed to work.
I wish I was 155 pounds...LOL! Any way, I've backed off the rear preload some more but not all the way and raised the tubes about 8-10mm. I can notice it all ready sits lower.
Gonna head out to do some dirt and find out how it works now.
Oh ya!! Just read a post on another forum from a guy in Connecticut with a Killer. He was asking if this is normal...ha ha ha. I'll paraphrase his post.
Today I was riding near here on a road that has lots of corners that are signed at 15mph. A guy on a sportbike started following me so I didn't want to hold him up and I went faster. The next thing I knew, I couldnt find him in my mirrors. Is this normal for the KLR to leave a sportbike on this type of road?
Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!!!!! He was being sincere. I told him to lie in wait on that road for sportriders.

Bad news Worm. You have now officially been diagnoised as terminal. You have been infected with the worst kind of motorcycle itis. Street and dirt bikes. The next thing you know you will find yourself being better rider because of the dirt experience, looking to slide the bike a little, enjoying those wheelies . It's just unfortunate that the insurance companies won't cover the purchases to keep your habit under control. But at least there are suport groups that can help you with your addiction.

...brakes SUCK!...I read that it wasn't the greatest, but c'mon!...stupid me, I sailed through a stop sign on a downhill thinking that I had enough room to stop Stop STop STOp STOP!!!...went back to the dealer...he said, "Its not going to stop like your 12R."...well no shit!...I'm ordering ss lines and brake pads TODAY!
...you're right about going about anywhere on this these things and I was thinking the same things as I giggled and made my way up the bumpy dirt grade ...."...I can just about go anywhere on this thing ..." ...hell, I'll eat corn anytime if it makes me feel THIS good
...re: KLR vs 12R on pavement...I 'think' a KLR through a turn, I 'muscle' a 12R through a turn...both make me laugh, one gives me a workout

(and I'm taking my first-aid kit, bike-aid kit, and cell phone with me...just in case ...c'yaz!

Good luck my friend. The other thing you'll need to work on is finding a riding partner! Makes the ride fun and tad bit safer!

OOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Didn't like that much! Bike is fine for the street but it's steering is way too quick for off road. Time to change the fork heighth back a bit.
Up to Stave Lake ysterday and today. Amazing how dry it got in such a hurry. If you're out off roading, take some bottled water. I went thru 2 bottles yesterday and was still thirsty. Plenty dusty up there.
Went way too fast into a tight corner on loose gravel and had no choice but use the back brake only. Ha Ha Ha......backing it in and hoping I didnt catch a rut that would launch me!!!!!

YIKES!...backing it in?...perhaps adult pampers will be appropriate for me if that happens.
A few Qs:
galfer pads: black or green?
synthetic oil: with such a low reving engine, is it even worth it after the break-in?
55/65w vs 55/100w bulbs: can the bike's electrics handle the upgrade?
Travelcade gel seat inserts: any feedback? I like the leg-room now, but if I go with the Corbin flat seat, my ass will thank me, but my knees will curse me. Stay with the stock height seat and gel insert?
Ultimately, I'll make up my own mind as to which way I'll go, but I'd like to hear some ideas and feedback.
I'm headin' over to the computer and office supply stores in a bit and getting 'something' for my first attempts of a home-brewed modification

re backing it in. I didnt have a choice. It was a down hill corner that went over a small bridge. Couldn't steer with the front or lean it that much because of all the loose gravel. Nail the back brake and point it to where I wanted to go. It's amazing what you can do when it's either crash or steer with the back end!!
No idea about the pads. I used EBC but can't remember what compound.
Oil? Hmmmmmm....I generally use normal bike oil. I tend to change it and the filter very often so don't really see the point of using synthetic. On the other hand, Motorcycle Consumer News did an indepth practical study and tests on oils and it showed that synthetic, no matter what brand, is better at keeping all it's anti wear properties. My theory is if you change the oil very frequently, the old dinosaur oil wont have lost much of its anti wear stuff any way. I'm sure theres arguments against that theory. I guess the bottom line is to change the oil often and in singles it's even more important. btw I've got a couple of cheapo Emgo oil filters for your bike, just pay the postage and I can mail them to you.
I think the Killer will handle the extra draw for the headlights. I had an extra light on mine with an electric vest and no problems. I never used both at the same time though.
The only thing I heard first hand about the Gel seats is that the owner said he could ride twice as long as his buddys with their stock seats. This guy was about 5'8" or 9" and never mentioned anything about leg room.
A thing I never tried on the KLR and am thinking of using on my liquid cooled Triumph is that "Water Wetter" stuff. Supposedly lowers the coolant temperature.
Anyone have any experience with this stuff?

...I lost one of my nutz...from the right shroud...and the speedo cable disconnected itself from the speedo side...this ain't no smoof-four that's fershure...but the fun factor makes up for it...had to fashion a 'tie' from some electrical tape had wrapped around the clip of my garage-door opener...McGyver would've been proud...I'm doing the whole dual-star-type nut upgrade...if I can't find the self-locking nutz here, I'll just get it from them...
...I'll get some napa 55/100w H4s for now...cheap!...if I keep this up, I'll eventually have Baja-Designs rewind my stator for more power to run aux. lites and other stuff...they're about 45 mins. from here...
...are emgo filters any better than the Kawasaki's?
...big gun or supertrapp?...so much to learn

...I was just perusing the USMC-KLR sites and seeing that the 100MPG diesel bike won't be available to the general public anytime soon, it'd be nice to have the BULLET-PROOF tires available, huh?...
...think about this for a moment: a fuel injected 547cc diesel with, 400cc-like power with more bottom end, ~85mph top speed, and 100plus mpgs...I think they're getting something like ~156mpg @ 40mph and 184mpg @30mph...now that's ultra distance back country trail ridin'...sign me up!

I think it weighs 'a little more', what with the mil-specs and all...the bullet proof tires alone must weigh a bunch!...and it also has one less gear (4-speed) and a smaller fairing...so maybe things even out, I dunno...but DAMN!...I like the mpgs!
