Tires: 180 or 190 better on a 600?

Some local guys been giving me grief about my telling guys to stick with the stock 180 size tires. They say "all the track guys and professionals use 190's". Last I heard, going up to a 190 takes away a bit of handling, adds weight to the critical rotating assemblies, and is only done on bigger bikes due to the higher HP they make requireing more rear traction.

I kinda defeat my own argument, however, when I realize that the 600's of nowadays are hp to weight just as powerful as the 90's era 1000s. So what is it?

Getting these morons to believe that they dont need 2CT's or Pilot Power Race's on the street- since they (95%) cant ride good enough PERIOD to need a sticky tire or (5%) cant push there bikes hard enough on the street to justify running them. I also said that the BT015 sucks on the track compared to even base Pilot Powers. So far no one has stepped up to my "tire where your mouth is" challenge...

180 is about all we use on the track - they're the tire with most rubber touching the road when leaned.

On the street a 190 has an advantage because more of the center of the tire touches the road. A 180 will wear out a lot quicker on the streets (same tire/brand).

The wider the tire the less grip on the sides is the rule. So the local squids should be happy with a 200!

Better be careful 'bout that PNW talk, there was more than a little animosity between a certain Moderator on here who left to be a Moderator on there... Then PNW sold out to some big ass conglomerant who is buying up all bike related websites for big $$$ and Beans tagged right along. Oops, did I say his name?

For all its worth: PNW didn't seem to be changed much after the sellout settled down. At least on the Forums side. I stay away from the other BS and make a point of NEVER clicking on any events or ads. I just wish Bikeland had a better representation in Washington State- though there are a few of us on here.

On Topic: Steve how does a 180 put more rubber on the ground when leaned over? Common sense would say when you put a 190 on a rim meant for a 180 that it would squeeze the tire beads closer together, giving the tire a camel hump-- which would theoretically put more tire on the ground during cornering, giving it sharper but less neutral steering.

When I told the local track guys that the boys in other parts of the US use mostly 180's they called BS

changing tyres & not adjusting the suspension will rarely net a gain. in almost every
sport bike mag tyre test they adjust the suspension. it is possible in a few circumstances
to net a gain by coompensating with air pressure & suspension adjustments. tho Not
usually just spooning on a larger tyre. of course what many say & believe are along ways away from a substantiated reality. those that think they need a larger rear tyre are rarely
faster, their cornering speeds dont go up, their lap times dont come down, simply a matter
of mine is bigger than yours...........

I agree Nick. These are also the same guys who come out with us streeet hooligans and talk smack about how great they are on the track, then get left in our dust in the mountains. Last year they finally talked 2 of us "street" guys into entering the annual "Seattle 100" race. I wasn't asked since I dont have track leathers, but 2 of my good friends went. Both of them first time EVER on a track, no qualifying or practice laps taken.... they came in 1st and 2nd. The 3rd place guy was a lap and a half back. I still laugh my ass off over that! Those two weren't even the fastest guys in our group!

The track-only guys up here are kinda inbred me thinks.

ok the 180 and 190 debate has raged for years......and probably always will....

There are factors to take into consideration here.....a 190 is a better tire for the track.....IF, you can adjust your geometry to set the bike up for it. If you can, then a 190 will turn in and transition left to right just as easy as a 180. In addition, the 190 will put a larger contact patch on the ground from full lean to straight up and down. The tire is bigger, it has to. Kepp in mind that air pressures, geometry and rim width all play a part of what tire you are going to use. Our tire vendors for our track usually only keep a few 180's in stock, and ALOT of 190s. I would guess that a 180 would be better on a bike that you cant adjust the rear ride heigth, as you are limited to just raising or lowering the forks.

ITS ALL ABOUT SET UP......

Did some looking around during our last round of racing. On the 600's I looked at, only 1 had a 180 on it, all the rest were running 190's. so I would put that at about a 10-1 ration of 190 to 180s.

Thanks for the info HDL. So it appears to be more related to what each geographic area uses as the "norm" versus what is actually better. OR, each benefit and draw back of each size outweight the other sizes benefits and drawbacks which results in a zero sum benefit.

I think its more in relation as to what the purpose of the bike is. Our local track is very tight, and if you are not on the gas while leaned over, you wont win. The 190 will have a larger contact patch while leaned over hence more traction. In addition, on bikes that have no ride heigth adjustability, the 190 is taller and will help with turn in. This would be important on a track that is 1.4 miles long, with 12 turns.....
