To Ducati or not to Ducati ?
Okay I need a census, you have the choice between any of the current 1000cc sport bikes ( R1, CBR, ZX10 or GSXR ) or a Red 2006 Ducati 749. I will never do any track days and the majority of my riding is done on Saturday and Sunday mornings for 2 to 3 hours around the outskirts of the city. ( Calgary Alberta Canada ) Cost wise the Ducati is not that much more and I am not concerned with servicing cost. I really love the Ducati but I am unsure if I will yearn for the power of a 1000 after a while. Need some advice !!!!

If you must get a Ducat, get the 999. Otherwise, one of the japanese 1000's will be a good bike. The 749 may lack the power you want.

I agree on the lack of power... you'll need to go for the bigger Duc... 749 may disappoint. Go big and you will not be disappointed.. I owned a Ducati for 4 seasons and I was extremely satisfied... If my budget allowed it I would always have one in my garage. Dont believe the BS about it cost more to maintain etc. Ducs are works of art and ride like a dream. Everything else is just a cheap imitation.

Now " THAT " is the best advice I have ever heard. 1000cc bikes are the badest things on the road and unfortunatly every tom dick and harry has one. The sound, the looks and the thought of owning a Red 749 does in fact make my heart pulse, it will be a pretty hard " NOT " to get one....
thanks blitzkrieg !!!!!

Just remember a true motorcycle lover will walk up and check out your bike and shoot the shit and not get caught up in ego no matter what they ride. 1/4 miles times don't mean shit once you put the motorcycle mags and websites away and actually hit the road.
It's all about the quality of the ride.
Duc's are bad ass and you don't see one everyday. If you like it, buy it. I guarantee you guys like me will be walking up and checking it out and seeing if you want to hit a ride next weekend as an excuse to go check out some new asphalt and a diner undiscovered.

749 is gonna be much more ergonomically accomodating than say, a 748.

Went back to look again and life threw me another curve ball. For the same money the salesman started talking about a brandnew 2006 749S model. Sat on that and now I am all confused again. The 998 is sweet but the 749S is new with full warranty, however the 998 is already broke in so it is get on and go. It is going to be another month or so before the big day so I think I will leave it to fate, if the 998 is still there when the time comes I think I will go with that, if not hello 749S.
Meanwhile I will be thier on weekends going Grrrrrrrr....!!!!!

That 749S has got to be a more comfortable ride than the 998.

I did not really feel any huge differences, I am pretty tall so the reach to the bars for me is not that bad on either of them. The biggest thing I noticed right away when I sat on the 749S was how dam skinny it feels between the legs. My old GSXR 1000 could be labled a pig compared to this thing. The 749S did have alot more " Wiggle " room than the 998. The more I think about it for me the 749S could be the perfect bike, It's not the fastest, it's not the most powerful, IT'S NOT THE CHEEPEST , but if everything I have heard or read is true it could possibly be the most fun ride thier is, at least for me and my style of riding. I think blitzkrieg said it best " Buy the one that makes your heart pulse the hardest man " and I think I have found it in the 749S. Now the question is gloss black or red ?

Not so sure, the gloss black with the white stripe on the back sure did look cool. I have to put a couple of " SHELL " logo stickers on it and they would stand out alot better on a black one.

I think SWFT is right ! if it's Ducati is has to be RED. So with that being said I think I will go with the Black. Why ? If everyone wants a RED one I want to be different.
