Yeah, I was visiting the folks and packed up ready to go home yesterday when I saw an article about the ride today (hence the short notice posting it on bikeland). A close friend lost her mother in October 2003 so I thought I'd spend another day in Parksville and get in on this ride. Plus I got to spend another day hanging out with family....seemed like it was all meant to be.

I will report back....

When I placed that last post, I didn't realise this thread was separate in Sportbike zone and Smackhouse..... this is pretty much copied from a Smackhouse post I just placed.....

So after deciding to stay on the island one more night, I hit up both parents and their respective partners and so scraped together $150 for pledges, plus $12 registration fee and showed up at the Parksville Lordco around 11:15am on Sunday with full tank'o'gas. Everyone was pretty friendly and milling around as people registered and at 11:55 they anounced that there was around 150 pple registered and that there had been around $10,000 raised in pledges. Cool- they had been expecting 80 pple and hoping to raise $8,000 (last year, the first time they did this ride, they had 41 pple and raised $4,000).

There were A LOT of cruisers (fitting I suppose as cheques were made out to Cruising for a Cause) and a handful each of sportbikes and BMWs. Also a spunky woman on a pink scooter and a shaved-headed woman on a bike green trike. Quite an eclectic mix.

At high noon, 2 bike cops rolled out of the lot leading the ride and we went down the old Island Highway through Parksville, Qualicum Beach, Bowser and along to Courtenay, then bathroom break and coffees before retracing the route home. (Note: Important on this ride to be near the front on the way to Courtenay and then when you get there, park and quickly get off your bike and proceed immediately to the washroom!!!! Do not even stop to take your helmet off. First in is first out. You have been told.) They had hotdogs waiting for us in Parksville when we got back at 3:15pm and then they took a group pic of all the participants and then I had to book out to pick up my saddlebags at my ma's and get on the 5pm ferry home.

I thought this was a pretty well organized ride even though it was only the second annual and they had twice as many participants as they were expecting- they had pple stopping to block intersections for us as we rode through the red lights with police escort and many people in town had signs and were there for wave at the procession. Nobody showing off and doing poppawheelies. I don't think anyone even dumped or tipped over. It was nothing like any group ride I've ever been on- is it because 98% of the riders were women, or was it the laid-back pace of the island? I don't know and doesn't matter. Bottom line is I'll try to make it a yearly thing and try to post it on Bikeland with a bit more notice next time.

I leave you with this, which I wore on a sign on my back for the ride:

We all have sorrow,
But, if we are wise,
We know that there's always tomorrow,
Lean on me

In loving memory of Nancy Leith
