XR400 or KLX300R Maintenance concerns?

I'm helping a friend out who is shopping for a used dirt bike. Said friend wants something affordable [like 1/2 the cost of the current thumpers] so I suggested the XR400 or KLX300R in around the 1997 or newer vintages. Mostly because the newer liquid cooled thumpers appear to be a bit more than they are willing to spend and the air cooled dirt bikes would be simpler to maintain.

Something with enough grunt for some of the mountainous climbs on the island, something light enough for trails, something with enough power for road work ala Baja Kit, something they won't be bored with after 1 year.

This buddy of mine used to ride in their younger years [YZ125] but has been out of the bike ownership scene for a hell of a long time. They manage to rent a dual purpose every once in a while to get out of town and play, but nothing competively serious.

I'm looking for some wisdom on maintenance concerns to watch for with those two types of bikes. Any info? Thanks in advance.

LOL. Yeah, I know it sounds like I'm buying it but alas I'll have to be content on the street for a few more years until I can afford to own both at the same time.

It's a co-worker that is in the market and asking me a bunch of questions. Notice that I didn't suggest a DR350?

So does anybody have any info for me or this going to be another thread where Newbusa tries to talk me into buying another bike and ruining my marriage before I'm actually married?

I have an XR400R and an XR650R (water cooled) in Arizona.

The 400 is much easier to climb steep rocks and land when
coming in for a landing off a jump... great little torque monster..
and easy to make street legal as it already has
headlight/tailight... just put an inline pressure switch
to front brake and pull a third wire to the tailight.
Mirror/horn, you're done.

When checking the oil on these YOU MUST WARM the engine
as it has a thermostat that opens, and if you put too
much oil in, (while cold) the motor will lock up and puke
oil out the carb... not good!!!
