Why doesn't the ZX10R have undertail exhaust? It seems that everyone else is going to it. Even the R1 has it..... Does Kawasaki not think about this stuff or are they really behind???

I think the trend is that the street bikes imitate race bikes. Ducati has under the tail exhaust and the bikes win, so we have a new trend. But then Colin Edwards wins the world championship last year with side exhaust. And the RC211V has a pipe exiting under the tail AND on the side. So what trend do we follow? Some of my riding buddies get all wet for under the tail exhaust. Personally, I don't care either way. I have been told that under tail exhaust is obviously warmer for a passanger when riding around town. I don't ride around town and one of the first things I do is to ditch the passanger pegs/brackets. Also, it is cheaper to replace side mounted systems than under tail systems. The ZX10 is just fine the way it is. IMHO.

seems to me undertail exhaust is primarily a style issue. personally i like the look & would kinda like to see an undertail on teh kawi. but the point is, kawi seems to lag behind a big in the styling department (at least in recent years) so their not adapting the underseat exhaust is hardly surprising. they'r just not as agressive in making their bikes look cutting edge. having said that, the 10r (and the 6 begore it) have bucked this trend pretty good. definitely looks new & different.

Gimme a break. Yamaha is a joke. Lets see how long it is before we hear of tranny failures from the new R1...hehe.
Id rather ride than "look pretty".
FWIW... a good friend of mine had an Interceptor with a single sided swing arm. I loved a single sided swingarm... but not enough to ride slower...lol
Im sure someone like Wolf systems will make one if thats really your thing.

Becasue Kawi did it right!
I hate the undertail exhaust systems that are on the new bikes.
Ducati did it right with the 916 series, but now their undertail exhaust is as ugly as all the others.
The canisters look to me to be some crap that was bought at muffler mart, no style of finish, just heat shields and weird shapes.

re: undertail exhaust: ...the Duc MH looks right...the new R1 looks right...the MV F4 definitely looks right...Kawasaki has no balls...the Z1000, 636, and now the ZX-10's instrument gage has no balls, either...I imagine Kawasaki had a clean sheet for the ZX-10 and this is what they came up with?...but what do I know?...again, I still very much like the new ZX-10, but c'mon Kawasaki...is that the best you can do? (we're a finicky bunch, aren't we? )

Undertail exhausts are only about design, there's no need for them (irl).
Kawi preferred functionality before design, as it should ____________

Bikes are not purely about function. Otherwise, we'd all be riding Burgmans from Suzuki. A motorcycle (specially a sportbike) is about esthetics. It's supposed to convey a message. The 12 was superlative in this. Every aspect of the bike let you know what it was built for. In a market where the other players are doing undertail exhausts, I don't think 'functional' is quite the message you want to send.

I think functionality is the bottom line. I wouldn't say that the '00
GSXR 1000 was the best looking bike in it's class in that year, but
i'm guessing that it out sold it's competitors based on it's performance.
It's also about personal taste when it comes to looks and I think
the ZX-10 is the best looking of the new litre bikes, and if it's the
best perfoming of them, it will be the best selling of them. (IMHO)

It looks nice, but it's not a necessity. I just like the look if it's done right. Does the performance change that much with each type of exhaust?
