Coby Adams.....704-662-0992 unless his number has changed in the last 2 years... and about a GRAND not counting parts..

OR as a second choice NOT TO IMPLY he's second best... Sal ( AKA... the ice man) on the site is also a great pick fr that job.. He has a great valve spring combo for the 10R as well.. Be careful of who's springs and retainers you use or allow someone to use on your 10R... Either of these men know their business.. I personally have a cylinder head by Coby... Look up Phantom13 I believe over in the 12R section for the hook up on Sal... He has his web page and numbers..

Coby usually hangs around the drag scene and Sal the Top END game of 9/10s and land speed..

Someone told you wrong... I've seen his work and it's BAD ! Real bad behind the valve seat area.. WHICH happens to be about the most important area of the whole damn deal...

i have had carpenter do three heads of mine. and all have been top of the line. you get what you pay for. iam not saying that he is the only good head porter out there just that he is the bench mark. that's just my 2 cents.

Coby damn sure isn't cut rate...... Next time you have a valve out of yr cylinder head stick your finger behind the seat area and feel that ridge in there.. The heads that I have seen come from Carpenter's CNC mill all have the porting program stop short of the seat and for some reason he didn't feel the need to hand blend that area...NOT SAYING his work couldn't be top notch but failures to do that simple task gets him a FAIL mark from most all engine builders..

Air don't flow smoothly over and around sharp corners. In fact sharp corners cause turbulent airflow which is exactly what YOU DON'T WANT especially just behind the valve... That will cause the air to flow everywhere first EXCEPT strait into the cylinder which is the object of the game here... The angles on the valve seat are also very critical to this flow.. Tons of power gained or lost just by using the right or wrong angles. The area just inside the combustion chamber ( bowl area around the valve) is also VERY important to not have sharp corners for the air to flow over and around. This is why a moron that sinks your valve too deep while doing a valve job for you will forever ruin your cylinder head until new seats are installed.. One slip of the valve seat cutter and the head is JUNK. This is why Guys Like Coby Adams and a select few others are the best at what they do. They are aware of all these factors and keep them all in mind all along the way. Every little thing you do has to be offset by another move. Valve jobs effect Spring height, Decking the head effects Piston to valve clearance.. AND the list goes on and on.... That's why some motors run and others never will... You have to have all the information before you start just hacking away.... And like me NO ONE that has this information is going to just give it to you.. We all learned it the hard way....

That's your free lesson for today.. Now I suspect your inquiry was to imply I didn't know or have these answers.. AGAIN if you need to ask these type of questions perhaps some other sport may be better suited for you..

thanks for the free lesson....... but what i asked was.... what do you feel can be gained (performance wise...because i'm not interested in what it looks or feels lke when i stick my finger in it)... by removing material from this area. and your answer is?

in other words..... you don't know if there is any performance gain from this but you like the way the port feels when it's smoothed out..... thats all you had to say man...

Nope.... Don't pay me for shit... Pay someone like Coby Adams for that bit of information... And trust me pal I know what every change that I've made does and how much it does... I'm not going to tell you where to degree your cams or which changes pay the biggest gains for the least money... That seems to be what you are lookin for... Pay Coby...... He does that kinda deal for a living..

smoother airflow the better......straighter the airway tract the better....better flow....better power.....they teach you that in any small engine class, or tech school......hence the term, port AND polish.......

hellsdarklord, thanks for the response but my question was specifically about this untouched area in the carpenter head... i have a carpenter head on my 10, just wanted to know if it was worth the trouble to mess with it, thats all....

Again............. send it to Coby and if it's not whacked he'll tell you.. The throat area just below the seat is VERY VERY touchy.. It will make or kill a port in a nano second. What kind of power does your motor make with the carpenter head.. My 05 makes 174 SAE with the coby head and it still has the OE valve job since my head was done when it only had 400 miles.. A good valve job will pick it up still more.. The information I have on the Carpenter heads was gathered when I was at Coby's shop from looking at a pile of Carpenter heads he was reworking off of everything from Busa's to 10Rs... All looked the same in that area... Bob is talented but keep in mind he don't do much of the work anymore. Coby still touches every motor personally..

with a turbo many dont bother to port. some of the people you mention are very adept at porting for normally aspirated engines. fact is the porting is different for NA engines or turbo engines. no less the cams are also. make sure you have the correct combination
of parts & tuning or you might be going backwards.

Fuck I didn't even take notice he said Turbo... Yea don't bother.. The exhaust port needs the attention there.. Also be careful of the Ti exhaust valves in the 10R... They don't like Temps a turbo will produce
