Akropovic Install Tips

Just wrapped up some mods and thought I might use this here internet thing to share.
First things first: Get a manual, a torque wrench ($a real one$) and some "U" joint adapters for your socket set. Rubber gloves help keep finger prints off the Ti so they do not burn in.
Get your baby naked. The Akro instructions are very good for disassebly. Start with the two middle cylinders, as this will give you more room to work toward the outer ones. Springs go on the flange BEFORE the flange is installed. When you put the new flanges on the head, you will notice that the studs do not protrude all the way through the bolts when you finger tighten them. This is ok, they will be almost flush after a proper torque. Do not put full torque on one nut and then the other. Move back and forth at least twice to avoid distortion.

It will help to have a buddy handy to help fitting all the slip joints together. It can get a little frustrating, so just be patient.

I removed my license plate holder to allow more room for manuvering the cans into place. Do not tighten down the muffler hangers until you ensure they are straight and even. Then found out I had to trim 1/4" off the plate on both sides to put it back in because it SLIGHTLY touched. Trimming was easy, I just followed the existing contour from where it was stamped. Fits perfectly!!

Last thing to do is wipe down the Ti pipes with WD-40 or similar. This will prevent the burn in of fingerprints from your grubby little paws. Also will give a uniform color. It will smoke like the Marlboro Man when you start it, so do it outside.

I would recommend a EFI module because the bike runs rich below 5k. I did the PC3 today too and used the map listed on their site. Cured the issue by leaning out (-3 or so). Only one thing left to do: RIDE IT!!!

Funny you should ask. It ran ok at first but sputtered a bit under 5k. I just toodled around the neighborhood. Got back home and was going to plug the PC3 in to make sure I didn't drop a map from a scooter in. Thats when I noticed that my air temp sensor had fallen out! Put that in and BAM! She's back!

Thanks, Warbird. I gotta say that all in all the thing is well engineered. I am a PE and an EE so I am a wee anal. You can see that while the passenger pegs fit well over the pipe, all would be well without them. The other heat pieces could go too as it all will soon. I put it all back for photo purposes. You get what you pay for! On that note, AreaP is a great value too, it is very well designed to remove the "unnecessities". If you don't want a full system, that is THE way to go.
