06 ZX10R gettng hot, temp all over- help

I have had my 06 ZX10R for about two years now. In the begining i paid close attention to how she ran, how she sounded and of course how warm was normal for her. It seemed to warm up at a normal pace and like to hang around 182 F. It would warm up to 192 if i got stuck at a light after getting off the freeway or splitting a good amount of traffic, but would drop right back down. It didn't really seem to matter if it was 50 outside or 100. One day i was riding home from work and lookat the temp for some reason and noticed it was at 189. Ithen hit traffic and it went up quick. Hit 200 then 212 in no time. then all of the sudden plummitted to 181. It did this until i got her home where i looked over it and everything seemed fine. I rode it a day or two later and it was cold (55 F) outside. It took forever for it to get up to temp. It hung around 150-155. Not until i hit a little traffic did she warm up, then she started the up and down crap again. I calle dthe guy that does my tuning and he said check the radiator cap and see if it is dirty. A small amount of crud in between the seals could cause a lack of pressure and it may warm up. The service department at the shop i purchased it from said "Don't worry about it. As long as the fans are coming on, that bike will run 220 all day." I say BS. It didn't run like this when i first got it and or for the first year and a half. I am going to have to take it in i guess and hopefully warranty will cover it. I am thinking it may possibly be a bad thermostat or something.
Anyone else experience or hear of this before? If it is a quick fix i will do it myself. Not real comfortable with others working on my bikes, except my tuner.

Sure sounds like a thermostat sticking issue.

Mine (an '07 with 1300 miles) did a similar dance during cooler weather. Stable speeds bring temps down to 150*f or so. She warms up quick at a light, and if I am there long enough to bring on the fan (around 210*f I think) it will cool down FAST. IMHO, it is due to the 160*f difference in temp between the air and that massive radiator. As well as the lack of radiant heat coming off of the street. If it is less than 60*f out, I put a strip of aluminum foil over the right side of the radiator to block some air and keep in the heat, but it still leaves the fan open. This keeps my engine around 165*f. I do this with my Aprilia too.
For summer, I can't say. I bought this one in September and didn't get too many days over 80*f.
Anyone know where the temp sensor is located??? Depending on where it is in the system, that may have an effect on the reading we see on yhe dash.

I took the bike in Friday to the shop. Three guys there told me there is nothing wrong with her and that it will be fine. If i notice that 1) the temp does not come down when the fans come on, 2) the temp hits 220 plus while riding normal during a 80*F day or 3) i notice fluid coming out of her, bring it in. The problem is she is out of factory and the extended warranty will not cover diag time if there is no problem. The guy told that if it is running that cool it is probably a lot snappier power wise too. H...S... it is ZX10R, it makes gobs of power just sitting still! As Cycle World said about the 06 ZX10R when they did the first test, it has power, then more power, it has King Kong Torque.
I might try the foil trick. I would really like to check out the thermostat, just afraid i will find an issue and because i took it apart and not them, extended warranty won't cover it. Not it would cost to much for the parts, it is more principal.
thanks for the help.

I would check the thermostat.....mine gets hot as well....but never cools back down that fast....on a hot day here in Texas it will run about 200 all day long.....out on the track it will reach 215 or so while sitting still and hover around 200 while moving around the track.

Thermostat is an easy fix. I'll look into it. Only down side is the lovelyness of messing with the coolant. Oh well it will be a good time to Wetter Water it too. Does anyone know if there are different thermostats I can buy other than the OEM unit? I know for my truck there were a few different ones i could get to go along with my programmer.
Thanks for the input. I will obviously keep you informed as to what happens.
