My Track Day- AKA-"stupid hurts"

I'd been putting off writing this 'till I saw Fishies post of his crash and pics of his poor ZX10. Sorry Fish, frame sliders don't always do the job!

I killed my baby. Ouch. But walked away... so.... I get another one!

I was really excited about our track day, and first lap out I threw my ZX10 a 100 yards or more ....(more) down the back straight at Big Willow. WTF!!!
I've done several Track Days before, a couple even there at Willow. I knew the track was cold....I know I'm supposed to warm my tires.... blah, blah, blah
I have no idea what I was thinking, I crested turn 6, started to tip in and apparently forgot I was on a ZX10 (has the exit speed of a bullet)and faster than any magic trick I've ever seen I was looking at a blue sky and sliding on my ass at 90 mph down the track. ?? Never felt the bike leave, never felt impact with the ground, well not until the edge of the track where I did the sky-ground-sky-ground tumble. The only thought I remember having, and having very clearly and calmly was "I'm crashing". It came as quite a shock after 20 years of sportbikes with no down. Dirt's another story! Plenty a dirt samples taken here.

I guess all-in- all I still am the Luckiest Lo I know. Except now they're calling me
Lucky Lo-sider ! lol

My state farm agent said they will cover me @ the track as long as I'm not racing. I told him it's a trackday that we pay for to ride our bikes on and there is no racing.

Is that what you're doing LuckyLo?

BTW, glad you're ok!

Thankfully you are OK Lucky, way to ride the wheels off in the proper environment.
As far as insurance is concerned, how can they prove a rider was at the track?

That's correct NN. Insurance said as long as I'm not racing or committing a crime (? that's how I ride lol) I'm covered. They specifically said covered for trackday.

Policies do vary though DevilRider, so if in doubt you should check with your agent.

Bike, helmet, leathers, gloves, all totaled. Me... just a little leather burn and a few bruises.
I'm a HUGE fan of good gear. Get the best you can.... and wear it!!

The bikes not for sale... sorry Steve. Already did that. She's a keeper!

I'll post some pics of my new rocket soon... hope to pick her up today! Going back to a ZX600R. Lots of fun and flick-a-bility. Need a confidence boost (lol) and I was way over my head on the track with the ZX10. DUH.

Thanks all for your well wishes!

LOL... Good eye Gun Dawg. The hell of it is, I never even got to play with those awesome nose-standers. I took myself out so early in the day, I was over, done, and just kicked around the trailer pouting all day. Everybody else had a rockin' good time... my dumb ass....

Nobody wants to go down, let alone be the first, but to be the girl... awwwwwwwww my fragile ego!!! Yes boys, some girls have those too. Along with brass ovaries! Right PK?

I did that once. I had a bad crash in September it took me two months to get the frame straightened and the bike back together. Then I new I needed some seat time so I booked a double at Willow. I was so anxious to get back on the track, I got there an hour early got the bike set up on tire warmers and filled her up. Then came the first session for my group. I went out there thinking I was going to take it easy for a couple laps but at a pace faster than without warmers. So I hit the first turn in the first lap in the first session and down I went. I said what the hell happened. I ran up to the front tire and it was hot as hell then the corner worker checked the back and said cold tires. It turns out the rear tire warmer shorted out. In my anxious moments before I went out I put my gloves on before pulling the warmers off. I felt like the worlds biggest A-HOLE! I kept my helmet on during the truck ride of shame back to the pits.

I won't be riding till July I had a crash at Cal speedway after that when some guy on a 250GP went in a turn hot and Pedrosad me. Shattered my clavicle in about 20 pieces. The Doc put it back together last week. It will take three months till they can remove all the hardware then another 2 months for the holes the nut and bolts leave to heal. I've had a bad string of luck when it comes to two wheels the last few months. The guy never even said sorry. The second time around it just slid no damage. This third one was a very fast violent crash that forced me to get a new bike. O'well I have tire warmers that must mean I can just go out and get a new bike.LOL I bought a USED 06 10R, I would have bought a new 07 GSX-R but my warmers have a short.

Devil Rider, if you ride with STT at Grattan or Mid-Ohio like I do then you won't have to worry about insurance coving a crash. Monte can supply a letter from STT if needed stating you were in a "Riding Class" at the track, not racing. Your insurance will cover it and in fact should be happy you are honing your skills.

I have not crashed at the track, but I know people that have.

Thanks DR , yeah.. I really liked 'em too! Devil High Mount really "shows off" nice and sounds incredible on the '04/05 ZX10's. Payed a bus load of $$ for it as far as just a slip-on goes though... as much as some full systems cost. The problem we have with this one is the down pipe is welded and I slid so far it's been worn pretty thin. I don't think we know what we're doing with any of it yet... We will be rebuilding, I'll keep ya in mind
thanks for asking.

Glad to hear you and your bike weren't totaled, the bike doesn't look bad at all, I've been there and it isn't fun, my insurance didn't cover any "off road activities" such as trackdays and they required a police report with their claims so after my bad get-off I rebuilt my bike(bent frame, broken forks, ripped off/destroyed ALL the bodywork , bent wheels, busted gauge cluster and mount, case cover worn through, bent rotors, smashed exhaust, rearsets snapped off, suit ripped wide open in 3 places, helmet smashed w/visor ripped off, gloves with worn holes) out of pocket through ebay. Good luck getting back in there Lucky.

Wow!! cruised this forum cuz I'm thinkin on going with a 10 next year.(got a 06 Zx14)
But your thread reminded me I'm doing a track day on the 21st.
On a 14 with Stradas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe I'll keep the picture of your scooter in my mind as I let the go fast guys blow by.
And keep in mind I'm just speed training for the Salt Flats in Sept.
I got the Stradas to last through the summer commuting and 3-4 track days.
Then switch to better rubber for the flats and fall/winter.
The Pirrellis do a great job but are very slick feeling on the track.

I did my 1st trackday on the 12 with Avon ST's(Sport Touring) and had a great time. It was difficult getting off corners but they stayed consistent all day. Good luck.
