Tank protection, what do you have?

My bike has a pro grip tank protector, (carbon fiber look) but The tank needs more protection. The sides where my knees are against it are very vulnerable, and I know over time it's going to cause blemishes in the paint. I've looked at several things online, but have yet to find one to my liking. Right now the one I'd most likely give the nod to is the mag knight carbon look unit. It's magnetic of course, and has a clean look to it. But it's also $100, and I haven't seen one in person, so I am reluctant to buy one.

Any suggestions, pics?

This would be alright on the titanium color, but still not just on fire about it.

I'll check into that, thanks.

Another product I've been shopping is the clear vinyl stuff from Tankslapper. Their product won't work on the matte finish of my bike, but they sell a product from 3M that will. It's cheap enough at $30 or so, but if you screw up the install on the 3M stuff it's trash. Installation is not much different than tinting windows.

I make decals for a living so I put on a clear vinyl. I put on a clear premask, drew the pattern in marker on the masking, scanned the pattern, drew it in my computer and cut the vinyl. Piece of cake. I would show you a picture but you can't see it. :o) I covers the center up to almpst the gas cover, also the sides whrere your legs go. The only way you can tell its there is if you run your hands over it and feel an edge. I do them for lots of different bikes. The customer tells me how much tank to cover and I do paper print outs first to make sure everything fits first. Does the job. The clear vinyl is 2.8 mils thick. Not thin, not thick. I cover the clear decal with a clear premask which keeps the decal strong I use a heat gun for install so it will wrap and not kink. The clear premask will stretch with the decal when heat is applied.

The 3M stuff from tankslapper came in yesterday. I'll plan on putting it on the bike sometime this weekend. I'll post my thoughts on it after I get it on the bike. Gonna do that, install a 16t front, and the speedohealer this weekend.

Use Windex as a lube to position the pieces. Clean your fingers with alcohol before you get started and once or twice during the install (prevent's fingerprints on the sticky side). Use a Bondo spreader wrapped in Tyvek (i.e. FedEx enveplope) to stretch the material into place and squeegee the bubbles and Windex out. I've done a mile of the stuff. Windex is the secret to a happy, stress-free install. The material will move freely for a while allowing you ample time to position it perfectly.

The author in no way condones the unlawful pilfering of FedEx supplies (now conveniently available outside your local post office).

Thanks for the heads up on the Fed-Ex supplies.

About the same. Windex is sitting on the bench premixed in a spray bottle is all. It really lets you slide the material around till you're happy with the position. Then you start forcing the liquid out with your squeegee until dries. Then it's on tighter than frog pussy. 3M has some data on their site too.

WIndex will evaporate quicker. Soapy water could leave a cloudy film when it dries.

Their cut shape fits perfectly to the 10R tank. They are very flexible and will conform well on mild to moderate bends. Just make sure it is high enough from the bottom rolled edge on the sides, toward the back of the tank.

We will be using Stomp grips on all of BMR's bikes for the '07 season

If I don't like the clear 3M stuff I may give the Stomp grips a try. Still not completely down with the look, but I can see where it it is more functional than most.
