06' CBR1000 calls for 87 octane! How?

Is honda's fuel management system way to advance than the ZX10's? I was reading through the CBR 1000 06's manual, With the same identical compression ratio with the 10 how does Honda manage to recommend 86 or higher octane for their high compression engines? I've been using 87 on my 10 for quite sometime now. I wish a real factory rep would clear out this on going debate about 93 vs 87 octane. What gives?

The Honda most clearly has a faster burning combustion chamber..

87 is fine for your Kawi also. Kawi just knows that if they recommend 90, idiots will think it means its faster. most people believe higher octane gives more h.p., is cleaner, and reduces engineware. I tell my friend all the time quit putting 91 in your BMW its not doing anything. He replies "the dealer said I have to because its a high performance engine and it runs cleaner". These are just sales tactics and they work.

That's a really good point. I was thinking that being Honda they would have a more efficient and a more advanced ECU. I'm sticking with my regular unleaded.

That would be my guess as well. Everything being equal, the Honda's timing might by a little retarded(heheheh) compaired to the Kawi's. But I'm sure you could put 87 in your Kawi and not get any detonation issues, as long as you were running factory ECU programing. Octane measures how much a fuel can be compressed before it spontaneously combusts. As long as your timing isn't advanced, or you are running forced induction on an engine, the difference between 87 and 92 is really nothing. And as far as 92 being "cleaner" than 87, thats a crock o shit. Factory settings are pretty broad. Do you really think they would design an engine just to run off the higher octane and if not it would explode cause some guy got cheap at the pump? If they did that, there would be a shitload more bikes in the shop....but that's JMHO.

the "cleaner" argument actaully has some merit: higher octane fuels usually include more detergent additives. personally i doubt this matters at all, as basic 87 _has_ to be clean enough or everyone's engines would be gummed up.

Will higher octane gasoline clean your engine better?
As a rule, high octane gasoline does not outperform regular octane in preventing engine deposits from forming, in removing them, or in cleaning your car's engine. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires that all octane grades of all brands of gasoline contain engine cleaning detergent additives to protect against the build-up of harmful levels of engine deposits during the expected life of your car.

right, the higher octane itself does nothing to keep the engine cleaner, but most/all? suplliers put more additives in their higher grade fuel, or so i was told when i worked for shell (where midgrade was created by mixing regular and premium right atthe pump)
