Break-in is a huge part of it.

Do tell. My stock 04 pulls on 171hp gixxers and I broke it in mototune style. Where is your data, or is it all anecdotal?

All the companies supplying test bikes go through them multiple times. Kawasaki does exactly what Suzuki, Honda, and Yamaha do. They break the bikes in properly and make all the optimum adjustments.

Actually I recall in early 2002 the CBR954 making only 130-133sae hp in almost all mag tests, but one mag kept their 954 and put miles on it(SR?), later dynoing the same bike on the same dyno at 139sae hp with several thousand miles on it. Mine and a friend's 954 pulled 140sae(142actual) and 139sae on a local dyno both with around 10,000 miles on them. In this case the mags didn't test anything near a ringer but actually quite the opposite and the 954 ended up underated especially compared to the GSXR1000 pulling 144 which down the road the same GSXR on the same dyno pulled 142 with several thousand miles. So no, not all the companies do it.

Ringers in the industry.....what....never !

All i will say is my brother in law works for the Nissan factory and the cars they give the press are a million miles away from what originally came off the production line.
Even replacing some interior parts for better quality ones for the press. He has to prepare the cars before they are handed over so trust me EVERYBODY is at it.

Have a friend who is in his mid 50's now who raced for Kawasaki in the days of the 750 triples he weighs even now like 135 lbs; still dragraces his own creations at the track... point is he was an inside man when it came to producing low 1/4 mile times back then in 1970's for Kawasaki.

He tells me they took of anything not absolutley needed to lighten the bike to then produce the lowest 1/4 mile times possible ....then reported to the world what their stock production bike does in the 1/4 mile...guys would spend lots of money and time trying to get these times and never come close...that was back then anyways...

I still prefer a Kawasaki but sure don't buy all magazines say blindly...

I guess it depends on your definition of "ringer". No factory is going to send a test bike to a magazine that has not been through an exhausting inspection process. I'm not saying any of the factories are using non-stock parts. Those stock parts are checked and rechecked. Magazine reviews are just too important to leave to chance.

That is unless you are Kawasaki and just hand an overfilled unprepared ZX12 to the press.

And that's another great example that not ALL test bikes are ringers(but they are there). Doesn't have anything to do with the name on the side of the tank, more to do with the demand of the market they're in. The current Literbike market is tighter now than four years ago, hell, TWO years ago! So close that you can throw a sheet over all 4 stock bikes from Yam, Kaw, Hon, or Suz so they're looking for that edge(ex: press). Just like the 600 class has been for quite some time now.

I think mags should get there test bikes randomly from dealerships. But I bet a few manufacturers wouldn't agree to that in every case!

I also think that the press should be diligent in checking the bike over and making sure that it is set up properly. The way a customer demands it from a dealer. If a bike is overfilled it will most likely blow some oil, a customer would not stand for that. So that means, new filters, proper oil, proper pressures, and proper adjustments.

Look like Lester's to me............Comstar's were on the Honda's Eric. They were a two piece wheel with the spokes riveted to the rim.

Everyone does the ringer thing. I'm in the Gun business and I do the same. If I know that I'm sending a gun to a real particular gun guy I make double damn sure that it's perfect in every way possible. The fit and finish become as important as the function. These things are always important on every weapon, but when the stakes are high they become twice as important. Kawasaki is NO different.
