question about helmets and jackets

Is there much of a differance between the helmets in the $200 to $300 range? There all pretty safe right?
Whats the best leather jacket for summer riding?

good question.. the helmet thing is pretty controversial... I know the test Motorcyclist did showed cheap helmets faired better than their expensive counterparts in some situations..

I've been wearing Arai helmets for years, but the last two months I've been using and AGV TiTech... fit and feel is remarkably different. The AGV fits so tightly and is so light you almost dont even notice it is there.. hard to tell which I prefer right now...

IMO just choose the helmet that fits the best. and make sur eu keep it on your head 10 or 15 minutes if you can, since you only start to feel some pressure points after a while. first helmet i bought felt great when i put it on, but after 30 mins of riding i had a pounding headache.

as to jackets (and pants i hope) for summer, my kevlar suit is really cool (temperature-wise) and did very well in a 50mph crash. i don't much like the mesh jackets as i don't trust them to hold together in a crash. some models are reported to fall apart in seconds (others are decent i'm sure).

the draggin jeans are nice....Icons suck ass....Icon only reinforces the knees and hips....Draggin has a layer of kevlar through out from my understadning....

I have tried lots of different helmets....I just recently bought a Arai Astral...very nice....the last 3 were Arai Quantam F's, I have had a nice AGV Demon vent, and some cheap Beiffe and Nolan helmets......I crashed my motorcycle at 165mph on the race track while wearing a Arai Quantam F, adn my Joe Rocket Speedmaster suit and AGV gloves and boots....got up and walked away.....I trust what I have tested, and will stick to it....I have since bought 3 more Arai's and am still using the suit. I replaced the gloves with the same model as I had.....if it aint broke, dont fix it.....

Additional not, I crashed another Arai in a highside in the mountains and still have it as a trophy as well.....got an Okada edition Arai Quantam for the track, and my Arai Astra for the street.....

One of the guys on our race team just got a Shark helmet and it has something I have never seen in any other helmet... "crumple zones" in the styrofoam part. Many say this is the latest in helmet safety. He's had AGV, Icon and Shoei helmets and just loves his new Shark.

I too have gone AGV Titech recently as the shop had an unpainted shell to show the construction of Carbon and kevlar woven together. A clever piece of design i can tell you.
Arais and Shoeis are starting to fall from grace especially Arai as they have been using the same basic shell for years and in my book i think technology, design and materials available make that a damned shame as they have all progressed but those in the industry insist that Arai havent really changed for years.

But the best helmet of all is the one that doesnt get bashed. Keep it upright.

I have heard that Arai is the only lid where the one you buy is the same one they give the sponsored racers to wear.

isn't the entire styrofoam part a crumple zone by design?

that is what I thought freek, its suppose to absorb the impact......if it crumples then it means its getting smaller in places...not a good thing I woudlnt think.......but I am not ahelmet designer, just a wearer.....

It is more of a "compression zone" in most helmet designs. Being a "solid" piece of styrofoam, it will only compress to a certain point before it will start to transfer the full amount of any remaining force of the impact to the head of the wearer.

Shark's "rafter" design allows more of the force to "bleed off" before the styrofoam reaches "full compression" and thus greatly reduces the overall trama. Even though I have a new Arai still sitting in the box, if I do go shopping for a helmet, the Shark line will be the first one I look at.

Have an 04 shark RSR2...big POS...pieces always flying off that thing...noisy, poor optics, very steep price and just try getting parts for it...what overpriced garbage it is...90 fucking dollars for a shitass visor...my $200.00 Scorpio helmet blows it away...and takes only 5 seconds to change visors, not to mention better fit, better visor, way less noise and 1/4 of the price. Good luck to your bud with his Shark...hope he never needs parts...
