Change in my 10R's status
Well, the big day, the day I took the 10R to the track, occurred.
My beautiful streetbike and I had been blasting the canyons in 2004. We'd put 9200 or so miles down together.
For 2005, I discovered racing. My 10R got 500 more miles the entire year of 2005, my 636 got all the attention.
Late December 2005, I was in the canyons with a buddy, and afterwards, at my breakfast table, discussing the ride. I'd mentioned that I took one corner at about 12,500 RPM. My wife dropped the coffee pot and said "That's, what, 100 MPH, Asshole?" Busted...
So I turned in the plates.
I took it to the track this weekend, Arroyo Seco, Deming, NM.
I have some observations:
1. Slipper clutches still step out the rear when you bang a downshift into first at 110 MPH.
2. The bike is perfectly geared for a tight technical track. Just don't ever expect to shift past third, and that only for the final seconds of the big straight...
3. What you may think is a great suspension/geometry setup for the canyons sucks ass for the racetrack.
4. Melting Pilot Power fronts by pushing is not a good way to warm your tires.
4a. The 10R dirt-tracks just fine.
5. If you're used to entering a corner at 123 MPH on a 6R, you need to reacclimate to entering that corner at 140 MPH on a 10R. New braking markers are suggested.
5a. The 10R dirt-tracks just fine.
6. The 10R, with a PR-C front and 4mm ridehight taken back out from the front, handles just like my 636.
7. Once I got the cornerspeeds up, if I saw you on the track in front of me (and you hadn't passed me), I passed you within one lap.
I will now be racing this bike. I'm slightly faster on it than on my 636.
And Hell's Dark Lord does OK on the track, too.

A clarification: I'll race this bike as my second bike, I'm not chasing any championships with this one. I think I will be bringing it to Buttonwillow for March's AFM round, if I can get a shock and the requisite safetywiring and crap done in time.

I just picked up a set of Pirelli Slicks from Ivan to run in April. So I need to play with the suspension to get it right....and I need a set of rearsets, I am tired of finding nuetral in the horseshoe....lol

You should be a LOT faster at Buttonwillow on the 10 and a good shock makes a huge impact on the 04. Well tuned slipper clutches do not step out the rear on downshifts. As delivered the 04 needs some tweaking. I understand the trick is to start cutting fingers off the diaphragm springs that control slippage until you're happy. Perhaps someone with some inside info can comment on this. Hint hint.

before i cut anything from the slipper clutch, I woudl look into the shims that KHI sells for them that adjust the slipper function of the clutch...

I've been told the factory race team lops fingers off. Like maybe half of them. Not sure the exact details. Somebody knows for sure.

i still believe that using a $2 shim is far more desireable than cutting fingers off the clutch that can not be put back on.....if the shim doesnt work you are out $2....if cutting the fingers off doesnt work how much are you out for a new one???

Or, you could just slip the clutch...
I think I'll leave the internals alone. I know the slipper is doing good things elsewhere on the track.

1:17's for me with the bike setup like it was. Dunno about HDL.
I'll need to get into the 1:15's with this bike to have a shot at a win in AM ULSS at Arroyo. I expect to start racing the 10R mid-season there, as I plan on chasing the HWSB championship with the 636 first.

I was getting 1:18's with the stock set up, I think with some suspension tweaking and some new brake pads I could get into the low 17's or maybe high 16's which I think will be competitive in the beginner class....
kinda been thinking about seeing if I could find a good 600 for cheap and run it.....its expensive to run 1 bike, let alone 2.....

Pics of the track:

There were some pics of me on the track that weekend, too, take a while for me to dig them out of the 1000's of pics taken.
