10 ZX9
A friend of mine said that he was thinking about buying an '01 ZX9. He asked me what I thought of them. I told him that I demo rode one in Daytona and was pretty impressed with it. It seemed to have pretty good power and was comfortable to ride. Compared to the ZX10r the 9 is bigger and heavier though (and of course slower). I also told him that I heard that some of the 9's had transmission problems. What advice or experience does anyone have with this older Ninja?
Another thing that he asked me was about the fuel delivery on this bike. He was wondering if it was fuel injected or carburated. I was thinking that it would be fuel injected but I am not sure if that year was or not.
He was also considering buying an '05 R6. He asked me which bike was faster. I told him in a drag race the ZX would beat the R6. On a track however, the R6 would probably come out on top because of its lighter weight and better handling.
When he asked me which bike I would rather have, I wasn't to sure what to say. I would like the low end power for street riding and the price (almost $2000 less) better for the Kawi. On the other hand, I also like a light bike and the R6 is lighter. I also would prefer the newer bike. I have never had a Yamaha street bike so I can't go on past experience. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I didn't have an 01. But I did have a 99. It was a great bike. Very comfy and rock solid. No tranny problems what so ever. It had almost 19,000 miles on it when I sold it.

my 00 zx9r has been great. no tranny problems at 20000 miles and I ride it fairly hard with out using the clutch to shift most of the time. Dragged it for a couple of years and spanked busas left and right in the eight mile, that was until a few of them finially learned how to launch them and then I only lost by a tenth or two.

ZX 9 makes for one of the best overall street bikes. comfy, better handling than most riders can dish out, rock solid motor.. With a little work they can be really fast too, not that they ar slow, far from it.

My 99 was sold with 33000 miles on her. No tranny probs . More of a sport tourer (multi mission capable ) than a track bike. Think low level cruise missle. You cannot go wrong with one. Plus Muzzy has cheap big bore kits for it!

If your friend decides to get the bike the 05 R1 radial master cylinder bolts right on greatly improving the 9R brakes. The stock 9 brakes are not bad but used hard they fade quickly. No such problem if you have a radial master cylinder. Price of the master cylinder was 122.00 well worth the extra braking power......

SS,
the 00 and 01 9R is the same bike just a colour change the 02/03 had upgrades to carbs frame and front brakes. I have an 00 model as a track bike 30,000kms on the road prior and not a problem, many people have underestimated the 9R correctly setup suspension and tuned ( throttle response is a little abrupt ) this is a great bike for all round riding that certinally won't disgrace itself amongst the others out their.
Engine and tranny are bullet proof just regularly serviced should last for years!
