Logically, it seems the truth is in the middle or rather there is truth in both:
Speedgene's argument is, if you're happy checking the valves extremely frequently, you could have them at a more-optimum setting on an ongoing basis during those first 15,000 miles. Tightening it up at 500 miles though will result in having to keep working to keep them from getting too tight.
Ted's argument is, if you tighen them at 500 to middle-of-spec, then long before 15,000 they're going to go too tight. And since the number of miles that they're going to take before getting too tight is unknown, or at least if it is unknown, then unless you have a quite aggressive valve adjustment schedule you may well fuck your bike by tightening it up at a point, 500 miles, where the valves are in an ongoing process of tightening more rapidly than usual.
