Tank Slap at 230km

I've just ran my '05 10R' in and decided to open her up.

Today I got this whooping slap going just after I changed from 3rd to 4th at 230km.

I shit my pants...... As you would

I've got a hyperpro damper and it was set at half way. It must have taken some of the slap, but i dare think what may have happened without it.

I never thought she'd be this wild.

Should I be expecting this to happen everytime I nail it????

I must be doing something wrong here. I haven't got a damper on yet but i've reached speeds up to 170mph and not even a small vibration. This babay's running smooth and I have it at stock settings. I keep hearing about tank slappers at high speeds? This particular bike was made for smooth riding in the triples w/out a damper! Dampers are mainly for extreme twisty riding IMO...as far as normal straight riding, if you're having tank slapping issues, go back to the manual and set up the front end according to your weight and seriously check your front tire!

I just remembered having shagged front tires on my 1st 954 and it had a wobble til I changed it, like he said check yer rubbers.

If it just up and shook(or went into a slapper) there must have been something to set it off, especially with a dampner attatched. Must have hit a bump off center or shift gears rough.

As I have been saying, dampers are not a guarrentee against tank slappers. They help, but do not prevent them. Any number of actions can cause them. Being smooth with your input, adjusting your weight distribution will help prevent them.

crip2nite - Nothing wrong with yours. I rode mine for quite awhile and aggressively in the twisties with no unmanageable issues. It was more comfortable with the Muzzy damper set-up on it, but she can still swap pretty good even with it set firm. So no guarrentess one way or the other.

zx12adam - Your second paragraph sums up a few of the most common causes of tank slappers in a straight line.

Thanks for your replies...

I think the reason i got the slap was... the front end lifted when i changed form 3rd to 4th.

Also I heard the dunlops that come with the bike are shit. anybody???

Also try backing off your rebound on the forks.
