Will the ZX-14 be top speed restricted?
Hi Folks; questions:
1. Is the 186 top speed restriction a reality ? It is in effect for all busas apart from the first year it came out ...true? at least thats my understanding.
2. Turned out our ZX-10R top speed is only limited by it's aerodynamics and not factory limited.. Also true as far as I know.
3. So the ZX-14 will be limited unless Kawasaki chooses to ignore the 186 restrictions Europe pressured manufacturers to abide by for safety reasons?.
Anyone care to elaborate? just asking civil questions to ya'all as there is much expertise on this forum and I consider you fine folks an excellent source....I happen to have a Black 2004 ZX-10R and would appreciate any input on these subjects I am researching.
Thanks in advance.

Salsa only time will tell on that on that, but my sources tell me this bike was design for the US market and they were after the top speed title, with the AGREEMENT is just that an agreement, it's the law. So we'll see................................Hey the bike has a shift and a LAUNCH light for optimum clutch engagement, and spent alot of time in the wind tunnel during development, it's supposed to fly!
I would hope so I think KMC got the short end when they signed that agreement after the Busa done it's thing

Could be.
It could also be that, since Europe was the focus of the agreement, Kawasaki might restrict it for Europe but not the US, and be unilaterally informing Suzuki of this, assuming the agreement allows such a decision which I'd suppose it would but not having read it is impossible for me to know.

salsa... all the models that can achieve a speed over 186 have been "limited" electronically. This limitation is easily bypassed. The 10R required no limitation because in theory it could not exceed that speed.
Someone would buy a 14 if they wanted to go really really fucking fast.

It was never a matter of law, but rather, a perception by the manufacturers that if they did not voluntarily choose to limit speed below 300 kph, that the European governments would legislate their own limit, which was unlikely to be higher than that and might possibly be much lower.
And indeed, post-limit there never was such legislation passed.
In other words the agreement is an agreement between manufacturers, not an agreement between manufacturers and government.
Whether the agreement permits withdrawal or amendment, I can't say, but it would be an unusual for a voluntary agreement among manufacturers to forbid ever changing or withdrawing.
Not knowing the details, it's hard for me to see why a manufacturer might not decide, "If you'll continue adhering to the limit in Europe, we'll continue adhering to the limit in Europe... but in the US, we're going to sell derestricted bikes."
I am NOT saying that there's the slightest info I've seen that that is the case... speculation only.
Personally, my guess is the speed race really does have no further point... 186 mph is fast enough for almost all roads in America and the press probably is not going to buy into further speed competition. However, breaking into the eights with stock motor and stock wheelbase no bar, with professional rider, that WOULD get a hell of a splash.
If Kawasaki wants huge performance kudos for this bike, that is my guess for the target.

Thanks all . My quest for verification on these issues has been satisfied. Now I don't have to look up past issues of Cycle world and Motorcyclist magazines from 4-5 yeatrs ago where I got informed on this stuff...as a continuum ;the ZX-14 will bring out these types of discussions for quite some time.
Gracias!!
Peace to all.

You should all know that bikes are not limited in any way except speedometer.Only gaudges show 186mph and thats it, but rpm's rise further, bike accelerates further and is going faster and faster until it reaches air-limit.There are no limits to engine up-to-date.
Remove speedometer and you won't have any "visual" limits

The 10 is not speed-limited except by aeros and power; the 12R however is.

anyone saw 187 or 188mph on 10?
Lets say with rear/front sprocket change? I think speedometer is limited on 10, and the same goes for 12R. Engine won't cut off fuel feeding.

OK, I guess you know how the 12R works. Everyone else is wrong, it's just as you say. My mistake, shouldn't have spoken. Kawasaki has never made a speed-restricted bike (other than as you say the numbers on the speedometer; the engine has never been speed-restricted) so why we were even asking about whether the 14 would continue such a thing: that was pure ignorance.

Well....who is "everyone"? This board? Thats not everyone... small percent...
Real top speed runs were made, and no engine cut-off's. I even got video with 310+ km/h onboard zx12r. Nothing restricted.

Yeah, like I said, you are correct. I must have been really stupid to think the 12's motor (2001-2005) is speed-restricted. What ever could have come over me? Thanx for setting us all straight

Yea 00' zx12r absousutly not restricted will walk all over anything made from 01' to now! it is simple for top end , but the 14 might be awesome at the drag strip with gearing and the typical modsand a arm 8.85et at 150+ mph. I like zx10r it is like a #15 blade where my 12 is

00' 12r's only "restriction" was the exhaust system. Power dropped from 155 hp at 10,200 to a measly 144 hp at 11,500.
Only adding a pipe and a map to go with it brought up 24 hp at 11,500!! Not to mention the 15 hp at peak (11,200).
What difference did this make on my 12?? Stock, I went 184.5 (using Cycle World's Radar Gun to verify). After installing the Pipe and map, I went 196 mph!!
