Dealing with the heat
It's hot, very hot outside. I still want to ride. But I won't ride without a decent protection. Even though I have several perforated leather jackets it is still way too hot if you get slowed down by traffic. So I looked at some vented jackets and the Joe rockets looked too flimsy and the protection looked like it would not stay in place if put to use. Then a local dealer had a green Icon Vent (color matched perfectly) that looked much sturdier than the JR. I bought it and it is really nice. Very light, air goes through it just right, it protects you from the heat blast but still has a ton of air going through it. The protection stays in place and is comfortable. Just thought I would share.

nylon, kevlar, polyester? either way, just dont expect the jacket to give u anywhere near the protection that leather will, so take it easy. fyi my kevlar suit works pretty well in the heat http://motoport.com/detail.asp?Merchant_ID=633Pm22C&Product_ID=780.102.155

What about one of those shirts that the astronauts wear? They've got some sort of space age polymer bead that extracts heat and keeps them cool in their space suits. I recall a while back that they were selling them - I wonder if they're still available anywhere.

I just deal with the leather and heat. Having had more road rash than most, It's just not worth it. In many cases, I'd rather break a bone, than deal with road rash. It truly sucks.... But having said that, I admit at some of the H-D shows I've done where we're cruising in Daytona, Laughlin, Sturgis, etc. I do tend to ride without one.... We all have our vices....

I think it is a compromise. We all agree leather is the best, but can be terribly uncomfortable in 100+ weather, not to mention fatiguing. A tee shirt doesn't cut it and is just stupid. Me, I ride to work and back. And now in Reno the morning commute is very pleasant, Is is all I can do to not keep going when I hit the turnoff to work. But the afternoons are brutal. A well vented jacket with reasonably good protection makes a lot of sense and allows one to enjoy the bike without becoming a complete tuna. And the jacket I am talking about has good elbow, forearm, back, and shoulder protection. They call it "titanium reinforced textile" as well as titanium plates on the back and shoulders. I am not talking about going to the track with this jacket but allowing one to enjoy riding while the getting is good..

Ted I have a few mesh jackets that I use...I have one made by Firstracing, and its a nice piece, cost me $89 bucks in Daytona at bike week a few years back. I also have a mesh jacket from Fieldshear that is my primary gear in really hot weather. While i have never had on either of these 2 brands in a get off... a buddy of mine was wearing his Fieldshear when he looped his GSXR1000 doing a wheelie at about 60 mph. He got away with some bumps and bruises, and a bit of roadrash on his leg. He was wearing a set of ICON denim pants. The spot of Road rash was about the size of the palm of your hand.....I think it was a combination of decent gear, and LUCK......mostly luck........nothing beats leather........

HDL and I am hoping we never put the gear to the test.
I also know that if you get fatigued from the heat, things could be really bad. That is why good venting really can make a difference. Speaking of venting, I sure am happy with my new Rx7 Corsair Arai, it seems to be better than my RR3.

Needless to say, when on the track, the BMR boyz have little choice but to wear full leathers. Though CMRA will allow perferated leathers, many of the riders do not wear them (why? I don't know). To help deal with the heat, our riders wear Under Armor under their leathers. Most of them wear the Compression Leggings (#0125) and the long sleve Compression T-Shirt (#4032).
Over the years, I've always worn a T-shirt with the sleves cut out and biker shorts. Odds are that I'll eventually have to shell out the $ for the Under Armor. The BMR boyz swear by it. Since tomorrow is "Ride to Work Day", I guess I'll just have to "enjoy" the heat index of 111° F (temps in the mid to high 90's and humditiy in the 70's). I can't really complain though, in Aug. 2000 the temps were regularly above 100 and the heat index was often in the mid 120's... and that was measured in the shade. 26 records were broken that month for highs, lows (highest) and daily average temps.

Shop around the net Ted, there are a lot of textile mesh suits with armor. Nothing short of pouring water on yourself is going to make a difference in traffic though.
