Julia "FlyingBusa" Sit Passes Away in Accident

Julia Sit, owner of the Flying Swan Motorcycle Cafe in Vancouver, BC, passed away in a tragic accident on route back from "Bog's Loop" towards Hope, BC, Sunday evening, July 10th, 2005. Julia failed to negotiate a gentle right hand corner, ran off the road, and succumbed to her injuries. Witnesses said that Julia was not speeding, and it appeared as though she simply veered off the road. Julia is survived by her son Jason, her parents, two brothers and her fiance Robert.

Julia was a pillar of the motorcycle community in Vancouver.

In June 2004, her partner Bogdan passed away in a speed related accident on the same stretch of road. (See related news story here). Julia showed all motorcyclists immense strength by striving to "keep riding" and to continue to promote the sport she loved so much, despite the loss of her partner. A true motorcyclist at heart, she will be missed by all members of this close knit community.

Many of us at Bikeland were close to both Julia and Bog, and we know that she would want all of us to keep riding. Her door was always open to all motorcyclists, and her welcoming smile will be missed by all. (See related news story here)

Holy Shit, I can't believe it....

Who was Julia.... well, I haven't spent a ton of time with her lately so I'm speaking from my experience from up to 5 years ago, but she owned (or her family did- not 100% sure) the Flying Swan coffee shop nearby Carter Motorsports. I kept bumping into her in recent years because she always seemed to be involved in all things motorcycle as well as all things involving both motorcycles and women. She and Bog (her long-time partner who passed away last June) were VROM (lots of posts can be found at www.vrombc.com- they have opened up their forum to all to pass along condolences). Used to be that whenever VROM had a ride scheduled, there could be a full block or two of bikes parked out front of the Flying Swan. I rode with VROM a few times but stopped after an aquaintance of mine (Ethan) who was really tight with their group passed away 3 or 4 years ago on an evening ride on the Sea-to-Sky- another friend of mine was on the ride and came around the corner to find him on the road. After Ethan's death, I never went on a ride from the Flying Swan again until Bog died last year and they ran an enormous procession of bikes to the funeral- it was amazing to see all the different bikes and all the different people that Bog had touched. And now Julia is gone- I can't quite believe it. I'm sure we will see the same outpouring of emotion and support.

Back when I was more in the know, Julia had several bikes, one was a lowered 'busa identical to one Bog bought at the same time. Seems to me she also had a cruiser and maybe another bike?? The details I remember are hazy and this would be 4 year old info now anyways.

Strange thing is that whenever I rode with VROM, back when I was riding my first bike, an EX500, and still pretty green, I always seemed to get lots of encouragement from the VROM group, never any pressure to ride fast, always a recommendation to take it easy and ride within my abilities. So what the hell keeps happening? Maybe other people have more experience with that group than me, or at least more recent experience that can help explain this....

My heart does go out to her new partner Robert. I heard that he is her fiance. I can only imagine that he was a huge support to her through the last year as she would have had to have been trying to deal with Bog's passing. My thoughts are also with her family.

RIP Julia, say hi to all the good people up there....

Spam has pretty well summed things up. I believe she had the Busa, an F4I, a V-ROD, and an R1.

A tireless supporter of the Motorcycle community and rider safety in all things. She'd donate her time and establishment for anything to help promote rider awareness, I've attended many functions at the Flying Swan.

Her passing will leave a very large hole in the local motorcycle community here, more so than anyone I can think of.

I just read in the paper today that the Funeral is planned for July 24th at Ocean View Funeral Home, 4000 Imperial Street at 10:30 am. A Motorcycle Procession to the 10:30 am service leaves the Flying Swan 1724 West 4th at 9am .

So sad.
I had recently seen a profile of her café on The Motorcycle Experience TV program.
Thought she was a great person for the sport.

GodSpeed.

Last thing I did before I left for Laguna was to drop the RSVP in the mail for Julia's and Robert's wedding.
I just spent the last 4 day riding back from California thinking about Julia and how when I get home instead of going to a wedding - I will be going to a funeral.
It made for a hard ride home.

Julia told me that she learned a lot about life from Bog when he died.
Bog was Julia's partner and he died in a motorcycle crash just over a year ago.
She said it was important to keep living.
To keep the community together.
To keep riding.

Julia, I am not sure what we are supposed to learn from you crashing.
I learned a lot from you how you lived your life.

After Bog died, you didn't stop living.
You attacked life.
I can still hear you telling me, 'eveyday is a gift - you know'? Every day is precious. You have to live life...."

Julia loved us all.

I love you too, Julia.
Thank you for everything.

When mere mortals die, nothing of conciquence happens,
but when greater mortals die, people stop and listen, and for a brief moment,
weather the deceased is known well or not, the world stops for but a heartbeat.
But within that space, an entire world of memories, for those who know and
fantasy for those who truly want to know, is born unto those who are gone.
In that world they live as heros and gods.

I did not know Julia, but I met Bog one day and liked him. I believe they ride now. Neck and neck in a race without fear, stop signs, gas or speed limits. They laugh and wave at us, waitning for us to join them
