ugh, chargin him with reckless is truly insult to injury. bloody unnecessary, i mean, how is a ticket gonan teach him anything more than such severe injuries? hope he heals up ok.
more importantly, glad to hear ur decision on ur personal helmet policy. i sincerely hope you stick to it, and ur other buddies who were there do too. i hope that new policy include wearing gloves and a proper riding jacket too, especailyl when planning any quick riding or wheelies. imo doing otherwise is naive at best.

I hate to hear about anyone getting hurt. It sucks. I hope he gets better soon.
We don't have a helmet law either but I wear my helmet if I am only going 2 blocks to the grocery store to get a gallon of milk. See, I have crashed twice in my life on the street. Both times I destroyed really nice helmets. The funny part is that I was never planning on crashing either time. I admit that I don't always wear all of my riding gear. If I know that I will be going less than 40 mph, I occasionally don't wear my full gear. But if I know I will be going faster than 40 or around traffic that will be traveling at higher speeds, I always wear my gear. I don't care how hot it gets, gear is much better than road rash. I found that out the hard way, also.

Man I hate that for your buddy! It's a shame that laws have to be in place to make people do the smart thing. I took a little road trip yesterday and went thu a couple of states with no helmet laws. Sportbikes everywhere and none had on a helmet!!! STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And just think your buddy was only going maybe 50 mph! Just amagine 100 or more.

Wife? Kids? Are you saying he's married and has children? Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... yeah, I'll say a prayer for his family and wish for a quick recovery from his injuries.... but DAMN! It's hard not to be as harsh as Jammer. If not even harder on the poor guy.
Where I live, it is not required to wear a helmet if your over 18, but I won't leave the garage unless I'm wearing full leathers. I won't even test ride a bike I'm working on down the street unless I at least have a helmet, leather jacket, boots and gloves on.
Your choice to start wearing a helmet is a wise one. All the same, if the same were to happen to you, would you not experience the same road rash that your friend did? Please do not take this as a slam because I do feel for you. It just that one might think it looks or feels cool to cruise around without any gear on, but how cool does road rash and eating through a straw feel?
Just because you might not be railing trough an apex at triple digits doesn't mean you can't get fucked up? To think that it is not a big deal to wear some kind of protective gear while riding a sportbike is..... well, stupid. If your friend is indeed married and has children... no, I'll stop right here. That aspect by itself (wearing no gear and being a family man) pisses me off so bad, I'lll probably say something that might upset some.
My point is that many of us here have or are currently racing bikes in some form or fashion. Many of us here have also probably dumped a bike once or twice in our day. One thing we all know is that it is not a matter of "if" a sportbike rider will go down. It's just a matter of "when". Since all of us have a choice when it comes to wearing the proper gear, if that "when" happens, odds are that if we have our gear on, we'll be more likely to make it to work the next Monday morning and still be able to provide for our families.
Maybe... maybe not. All I know for sure is that your friend probably won't be going to work tomorrow. If he was wearing at least a helmet, jacket and gloves... he'd be just sore and might just have a broken hand. In the next couple of weeks, when you see how uncomfortable he is with just the road rash and missing skin by itself, I just hope it reminds you of how much better off one could be by just wearing a few things.
I've been lucky in the fact that I've always wore full leathers. It might not be comfortable when it is over 100 degrees outside, but in comparison to your friend, my discomfort only lasts while I'm out in the heat. When I get home, I can take it all off. That's something he can't do.

I hate the fact that he got hurt and feel for him and his family. And red said most of what needed to be said. We have to remember that we have a responsibility to our families and if for no other reason, even if we don't care about ourselves we have to consider others. I am no one to talk, not a day goes by when I ride that bike I don't do a wheelie or something. But I do wear gear. There was no helmet law in Nevada when I was 18 but I got one of the first Bell Stars that came out with the flip up shields ( I think I was 16 at the time) and never looked back. I have and always buy and wear the best helmet money can buy and wear a leather jacket. Anything but a full face helmet is just plain foolish.

I just cringe evertime I read one of these stories, if he obviously doesn't have the brians to protect himself when pulling stunts like this then he deserves what he gets! No helmet No gear what the hell was he thinking?
These sort of injuries can destroy your life and that of your family who have to pickup the pieces how selfish can you get, by your description of his age he should have known better as least if he had been wearing a helmet and gear he might have stood some sort of chance to reduce the injuries.
This behavior and outcome just gives the authorities the justification to legislate the way we can act and who could blame them it seems that some of us just can't help give them the ammunition they need.
I thought gross stupidity was confined to my side of the world but obviously not, all that said I hope he makes a speedy recovery and his family don't suffer to much in all of this.
Sorry if I seem to be a bit harsh on this I am currently recovering from a track crash caused by the stupidity of a fellow rider likely to cost me a 12 month recovery stint so I am still a bit Pissed Off.

Your friend is why most states have helmet laws. Some people are not smart enough to care for themselves, and that is why the government has to enact laws to protect the stupid from themselves.
That being said, I hope he comes out okay, for his family's sake.

No helmet and wheeling-Theres always a price to pay, sorry your buddy has to learn the hard way
Also clutching up a liter bike is asking for disaster, no need with a 1k-if you can't power it up you shouldn't be wheelying it
Not trying to be harsh I feel for him-just abad way to learn a lesson

I never leave the house on two wheels without a fullface lid, leather jacket with armor, boots, thick gauntlet leather track gloves, and at least jeans if not full leathers. Your friend was fuckin around and crashed at ONLY 45 mph and got all tore up, but no remorse from me, we all know the risk. Was he the type to think he's too good to crash? That's an arrogent way to look at life.
I crashed at 130mph and walked away without a scratch as I was prepared for it, full leathers which were torn apart wide open(better it than me), AGV helmet which went into another rider's rear wheel and ripped the visor off, helmet also hit the pavement, track glove and boots. I wasn't even upset that I crashed as it happens to everyone and I felt I was long over due anyways.
My real question is why would someone ride a motorcycle without a helmet? Too hot? It's not any cooler with the sun beating down right on your head, neck, ears, and face. Comfort? I didn't feel any comfort in having my face windblasted at 70 mph, you'd be surprised at how much sand is kicked up by cars and unless you have sealed goggles the wind will draw out every drop of moisture from your eyes leaving you walking around with red bloodshot eyes. I rode one time when I was a newbie without a helmet, some people just don't think about getting your face drug across hot pavement at 80mph, having your ears, nose, chin, and cheeks ground off while you choke on your teeth doesn't look too "cool". I don't care if it's 120 degrees, the more you sweat now the less you bleed later. A good friend of mine crashed, helmet but no leathers, said his sheets were sticking to him for weeks.
Some think gloves aren't important, well how do you change the bandages on your body with your hands bandaged up and your fingers ground down to the 1st knuckle?

Guys, I agree with you all. It's a bummer to have that happen. I have not riden without full race leathers, back protector and boots, gloves, helmet for 8 years now.
Keeping you ALL in my prayers.

Man were do you start?
1. Not every one should ride the new litter bikes.
2. A real rider is the one with the gear on.
3. Carma is a bitch.
My prayer go out to your boy and his family. I just hope you all learned from his hosp. visit. If you cant power up on a cbr you dont belong on it. It is hard to keep it down on my R1 and the cbr is no pig.
