And the winner is......
Well BD and I went out to a nice long straight and did our little comparo. The 12 against the 10. The 12 has no cat, timing bumped, K&Ns, and the intake boots smoothed out. BDs 10 has a slip on and a 16 tooth counter. BD can chime in on anything else. The first run we did, we started out in second, and he jumped out about 4-5 bike lengths and I could not catch him, I would gain a bit and then lose a bit but it stayed out ahead of me. It ended up at about 4-5 lengths ahead. The second time we started out in 1st and he jumped out again and I blew a shift into 3rd (shoe laces) and it was all over. Then we started out in third and I jumped out and at the top of his fifth he reeled me in. It was a lot of fun and it turned out good. No one ran away. The 12 held its own, but the 10 won hands down. Now we will have to try my bone stock 10 against his piped and geared 10. We are wondering what difference the sprocket makes. This just tells me I made a good decision. It also tells me the 12 has a hell of a motor and is quite able to push around all that weight. Also after riding the 10 and then jumping on the 12 you find yourself banging into the rev limiter a lot. But no doubt about it, the 10 won the comparo.

It was a good time as well as informative for us both and while i truely thought i would prevail ya never know until ya line-um up side by each. Ted the 10 comes with a 17t stock, mine has a 16t so it deffinately made a diff but how much remains to be seen. The diff in rider weight isn't much, perhaps 10-15lbs (adv Ted) and the diff in bike weight is roughly 100lbs +-10lbs (adv 10r)
Our race from 3rd gear was very telling of what the 10 is capable of once on the pipe. Ted got out 2-3 bike lengths and i was just shiftin throught the gears @ 13k and i finally managed to pull even by the top of 5th and then pull past into 6th. As Ted says it was fun and although were of an older generation it still gets the spirit fired up in a good way.

It was a lot of fun, especially if you want to lose, which I did. Although I didn't think I would. I thought that the 10 would take me up to about 3rd and then the 12 would reel it in, no way. The 10 held its ground. Also smaller bikes are typically affected more by the altitude, so at sea level the difference is probably even more pronounced. My first impressions were from getting off a 12 and then jumping on a brand new 10. And like fish said there is a marked difference at difference stages of break in. This also gave me a better indication of how much better the 10 fits me, and how much more comfortable the 10 is, at least for me. I am very pleased with the outcome. BD and I might try later to see what the different gearing does. So after this the 12 has only 3 advantages, a fuel gauge, a bigger clock, and 2 trip meters. OK four, a tach you can read.
BD and I saw a cop long after we slowed down, but there were a couple of other guys behind us, we were hoping that they weren't putzing around and got tagged.

and neither is the 10, hell no PC, no velocity stacks (if they've proven to work), no full system, no TRE, no thin head gasket..........so basically mines as close to stock baring the 16t. other than suspension mods, damper.

As BD says, he only has the slip on which gives very little. I would think the loss of my cat and the K&Ns would equal that.

You'll probably go even faster shifting around 11 or so. It's dropping off quite a bit after 12k.
Taking her all the way to the soft limiter really costs ya some power.

What is really hard is jumping off the 10 and going to the 12. I usually shift by sound and feel. But I was used to the 10 and the lower celing was causing me to bang the limiter a lot. But we had fun and proved the 10 was up to the task.

So go down one on your sprocket and do it again. Big difference, I bet. The 12 would have passed and kept going at 175 mph, right. No wonder...it's geared to do that. Go down one on the front sprocket and the 10 will stay behind you the entire time, I'm thinking.

Don't get me wrong, the 12 is and has been one of my favorite bikes of all time.I love the look, handling (especially with a 190 Michelin Race). But 10 ten does the speed thing just as well and is obscenely easy to ride. It wheelies better, carries far more speed into a corner, allows you to come on the gas quicker out of a corner (with the added bonus of carrying the front wheel), brakes better, and for me it is more comfortable.

I posted this last June on the 12R board............
Over Memorial Day weekend...I went to LA to ride w/ some friends. We rode the PCH on Memorial Day down to the Ortega Hwy on up to Lake Elsinore.
My buddy has a new ZX10r(Black), broke in nice and BONE STOCK!
Granted....W/ gear he weighs 160lbs. I weigh 220 w/ full gear and the 12 currently comes in at 510.
We never did any "Top Gear Roll On's", but we did PLENTY of "pick your gear and go like hell runs!!" Believe me.....My buddy ALWAYS makes sure the 10 was on the boil in any gear!
I have a full on 200 H.P. 1270 kitted 12 w/ -1 tooth up front. If I did not have the piston kit he would of had me covered!!!!!
On the coast w/ 60 degree air my 12 never felt faster....and that damn Black 10 was FAST!!
I was glad to have him covered, but it was not by much! I would give him the snap and I could recover and pass, but at about a 3-4 mph pace. We would run well into 5th gear from 2nd....I have no doubt that I would leave him on top though !
I rode the thing and the best way to describe it is that it feels like a 98' 9R from throttle snap to 6,000 then turns into a 12R w/ a pipe and map from 7,000 to redline!! Impressive!

psycho, I'm still in disbelief. I just knew the 12 would cover that 10. But I was just flat mistaken. I will say this though, nobody ran away. The furthest either bike got away from each other was just a few bike lengths. But still.

Ted;
Your 2000 12 with a stock can is not the best for the comparo.....
The stock can was the "Restrictor" on the 2000. Power drops off after 10,400 rpm. Mine was down to 144 hp at 11,500! However, it made 155 at 10,400.
BOTH bike's should have a slip on and stock gearing for a test.

either way it was a good comparo, and i seriously doubt the slip did much performance wise. However since we did this i've had my PC installed and mapped so it would be interesting to see how much if any the tuning made.

True true, but the can makes little difference on the 10 so it was not too biased.
