Gearing
Hey guys. It's been awhile since I have been on the board. I have a question about changing the gearing on my 10. I want to gear it down alittle so i can gain some low end-mid-rage. I dont want to loose much top-end though. What seems to be a better choice? One down in the front or 2 up in the back. Who has tried this?

One down in the front will save you some money, if you try adding teeth to the rear you will probably need a new chain.

I have changed to a 520 set up with 2 up on the rear. 2 up on the back worked well, good out of the turns & didn't make it buzz on the freeway. I went to a 16 tooth on the front with the two on the rear & turned the 10 into a buzz bitch that you didn't like to ride. I like the 2 up on the back, the chain doesn't rub the nylon swing arm protector & if you decide to raise the rear up there is no problem. If you think you need lower gearing go 3 on the rear, its worth the extra money.

No you cannot as the axle is within 1/4" of being completely forward. When i was considering what final drive setup i wanted i searched the net for opinions and feedback and what i ended up with was a 112L new chain & a 16t CS sprocket that extended the wheelbase an additional 19mm from stock. WIth a speedohealer set @ 12% it still showed 172 @ 12.2k! and no it wasn't done yet, but i was on that day atleast.
cheers BD

Hmm, you really have me thinking now. Since we are on the subject of chains; did any of you guys have any excessive stretching of your stock chain? I now have 3400 miles on my bike and I was tightening my chain about every 200 miles or so. I think my stock chain sucks. Is that why you changed your chain bid daddy?

I removed the OEM chain within the first 100m and replaced it with the above setup. I used a DID 525erv that has about 2.4k on it with one minor adjustement since new. If your budget allows a complete setup then heres my suggestion.....a DID 525erv @ 114L and 17/41 AFAM or Renthal gear setup.

Thank you very much for the set-up big daddy. I definately will do the conversion. One question though. Isn't 17/41 the stock gearing ratio??

Wow you guys must ride a ton. The 10R is just my 2nd bike though so I've left the mechanical stuff alone. Still trying to figure out which does what with the fork suspension, lol.

Not to step on BD's toes as I value his opinions but if you do a search I think you'll find that the easiest and cheapest gearing change is to go to a 16 tooth front sprocket. It's probably the most popular also. An air impact makes it a 45 min. job. and no new chain or rear wheel removal needed.

I know on the dyno you will only be able to do 174 or 175mph and you will be at rev limiter with one down in front...

Ya, I agree that one down in the front is the easy and cheap way to gear down. But there is other issues that Iam considering; such as my stock chain is garbage. It will not stop stretching. So Iam definately buying a new chain. Second I dont want to loose any more top-end than I need. So I have decided to go up 2 in the Back. Therefore I am doing a complete change. Bigdaddy will I get some longevity out of the 520 conversion? I know that stock is like 530. Iam on the eve of ordering my chain and gears. I will be going with the Afam gears and the Did chain, 17/41. Do you know where I can get the speedo correction device? Thanks! Kevin...

the OEM chain size is 525. As much as i like 520 conversions i didn't go that way for a few reasons but if your wanting longevity with this bike you may want to stay with the 525. The SpeedoHealer is available through site sponsors i would guess but if not try

-1 +2 worked for me. New chain was needed. I gear for where I ride. What would motivate someone to change gearing without a specific road or track in mind is beyond me. They gave the bike a transmission for that. The close ratios in the 10R box, particularly the new stylee tall 1st, close 1-2 change, make that even more true.

any changes listed above will require a yellow box or equivalent to account for speedo/odo error
