OT: Windows Media Player

So Media Player 10 offers a new .wmv codec that is supposedly 'lossless'. This is a real boon to someone wanting to get really REALLY clean, pure music that's transportable. The bad new is that the files appear to be somewhat ... large... Still, it was a good time for me to play with the ripping in Media Player and just sync all of it over to my Nomad Zen.

Um. Swft, lossy codecs produce small encodings because they're lossy... they lose information...

Nothing you didn't know, just an opportunity to post

lossless compression isnt exactly an impressive feat, especially if it's less than stellar in teh compression department. may as well jsut zip ur WAV files with bz2. hell, for all i know that may be exactly what they did

Think of it as a service, Crispin, that we offer for free to our fellow Man.

I'm in the communications biz, some of the stuff the smart engineers say rubs off on me after a while... I think I've given up pretentions of ever being an engineer again, and have been subsumed by the Dark Side of Management.

Flac is a good compression tool give it a shot.
I've been using it with High res audio (24/96 or 24/48) for over a year with good results...

Well, I've had a chance to listen to some of the ripped tracks. And gotta say that the sounds are much crisper and clearer than MP3s...But like Freek said, I dunno what advantage they have over .wav files, other than the embedded info that the .wmv file contains. One thing for certain, they are *not* small, with an average size of 20mb.
