First ride after the new wheel
OK, so I go to the canyons for the first time in three weeks today.
In the interim, I have a new front wheel, new airfilter, and new rear tire.
And a new-to-me '94 ZX-6E to get running and safety-wire. It runs and is wired now, and will wait for a trackday in October. I rode it last weekend around the neighborhood, scuffing off the chickenstrips on the OEM tire .
So I climb back aboard the 10R in the canyons today. First thing I notice is the front wheel seems vague leaving the corners. I have a little rust to rub off on some of my lines, but I know I'm flying this morning.
I leave one big sweeping right-hander, and get ready for the slight left as I'm climbing well into the triple digits - and the front wheel touches down with a nervous shimmy - nowhere near a full shake, but a 'hello'. Never had that happen there.
Later, I was following and keeping up with some seriously fast guys today, so I'm getting faster, I can tell.
All morning long, I'm driving out of corners with the front wheel skimming the ground. This is a first for me, and now makes me seriously think I could use a steering damper. I was driving out of some corners in third gear to keep the front down :o
Maybe it's me getting faster and using more of the power, maybe it was the aircleaner change - dunno. I used a stock Kawi paper filter.
Man, I love this bike.

Here's the (only really good) picture of me on the day - a buddy was there with a camera - on the brakes hard entering a tight hairpin, about 35 MPH on my way down to 25.

Got my wheel today. Carried into dealership bare; just wheel & tire. It'll be the easiest money they ever made, since I'll assume they'll turn it into KMC for the full "service" (you know who I mean XL)....
Disapointed though that it took so much weight to balance (dynamic). Original wheel took 20 grams (2.0). Replacement took 40 grams (3.0 & 1.0). I did have them check it again before I left.
Although the service limit is considered 90 grams, it was still a little supprising. Will probably recheck using the static method to be sure they balanced it correctly.

I'd make sure that the balance point on the tire is in the right spot...
