How many have changed this? I am just thinking about it and wonder how most people that have made the change feel abou it. I think i will just go 1 down on the front. Any already learned info?

It's not enough. You need to go up on the back too. I went up two on the back and added 2 links to the chain. I'm in a happy place.

The -1F is just fine for the vast majority of riders.

What is the exact stock size on the front, 16? I just wish it would get out of the hole just a touch quicker.

Can you use the stock chain going down 1 in the front?

Yes, that wont change much. Its when you go larger on the rear that you have to get a new chain. Not enough links, unless you have a loose as a goose chain.

hey everyone:

- stock size front sprocket is a 17 tooth
- stock size rear sprocket is a 39 tooth

If you go down on the front sprocket your rear axle will go back a little further (about a 1/8"). So the stock chain will be fine. I have done this mod and it does make it easier to launch whether at traffic light or when dragging, it also puts the torque in a little more usable speed. As for the rear sprocket, if you go up two teeth you will need to get a new chain because it will slid the rear axle too far forward. If you do a lot of dragging or freestyle then maybe 1 down and two up is for you but you will need a new chain. This bike has enough power to pull it up in third with no clutch, I did the front for ease and it made it easier to launch in first without dragging the clutch. Also don't forget you will need a speedo recalibrator, whether from black robotics or speedo healer...

- hope this info helps

I just use a mountain bike computer. It also holds top speed and average speed, trip time, total time and other stuff.

Ater a 1000 miles or so the chain should stretch enough to go 1 down and 2 up ,shouldn't it?

Fuck no. The chain should stretch about 1mm initially and need very little adjusting over it's service life. To accomodate another tooth on this bike you will need a longer chain. Hell, to accomodate a bigger tire you need a longer chain. They put on the absolute minimum # of links.

My 929 had 4000 miles on it, I went up 2 in the back and put on a 200 and used the stock chain.

Different bikes, different chains, I think, Marsh.

MadKawHead (bovinesponge*) is right - the chain is short, saves weight. It shouldn't stretch too much, and it is a fairly decent chain, so it should last a while.

Swft had another thread (don't think the title was about chain) where we discussed the chain, and I think we concluded the stocker was an X-Ring (robbing less of that 181* HP on it's way to the rear *With Ram-Air).

This chain shouldn't stretch. Mine hasn't. Adding a 180 rear, my alignment marks stayed put.

[edit] my chain has 4600 miles on it now...

Marsh,
That's my experience also.Maybe a 1000miles isn't quite enough,and I still think it is,but after 2-3k you should be able to go down1+up 2 rear.
Bet you a dollar,Spongi?

If your chain stretches enough to accomodate a net gain of one tooth, it might be time for a new one. Seriously, the bike needs a couple links, perhaps 4, just to have some tire/gearing flexibility. The new Dunlops grow a LOT. I saw one of their slicks eat up a 3/4" gap and rub on the swinger this weekend. It's not like the bike is too long and the extra wheelbase is gonna cost you laptime.

Why not go -2 (15 tooth) in the front ;I love mine this way.

if I want to go +2 in the rear in the future for dragracing or more first gear bottom response (41) I can ;without changing chains in all this.

Speedo error is something I will want to correct sometime. How much$$??

Have fun ;Stay alive.

-2F is pretty xtreme! are you getting an excessive amount of chain rub on the swingarm protector??
I guess if your using it for stunts or drags then its about right huh?

A speedohealer is roughly $85-90.

Hi big daddy; actually no chain rub that I can hear; switched from 16 front to 15 about 150 miles ago. I will double check .

I really like it so far ;makes shifting 6 speed bit more fun. First gear is STILL ABOUT 90 MPH!! with 15 front. With the ZX-10R I honestly do not see extreme move with 15 tooth front. Just better everyday driving fun and more temptation to hold back from.

Wheelies in first was an issue at times even with stock gearing so nothing new .

I can shift early (at about 9-10k) into second gear and it still feels much like first stock now. Plan to dragrace some but will keep 15 for street . Seems fine....

Can't say I have fully mastered first gear like I would really like to...hope power will get more managable once lowered and front strapped down for dragracing.

Have Fun ;Stay Alive

I use a sigma bc1200. You program in the size of the front tire and it has a magnetic pick up that tell you your speed. You can program it for 2 bikes if you want to switch back and forth. It keeps your max speed, average speed, trip time, total time and other stuff. It goes up to 185 MPH. I wouldn't want to be on a mtn bike at that speed! They are like $20.
