A sponge/nylon kitchen pad, sponge on 1 side, abrasive nylon pad on the other side does it for me so far.Abrasive enough to take off the baked in rubber/boot marks;does not mark the brushed finish on the can.Works perfect.
I scrub with the aluminum brush marks grain[up and down],not against the grain.
Steel wool will work,I'm sure, but would easily mark,or leave a spot on the brushed alum. if your not careful.

Try a little WD-40 with the pad, it has a knack for removing all kinds of stuff.
