I wonder this as well.

I just hit 1200 miles.

I just had the oil changed and that was it.

There is no 1000 mile recommended service. It was at 600 miles. Mostly it's an oil change and a thorough going over. It's not "recommended," but anyone with Kawasaki experience knows to check valve clearance.

You mean any dealer knows that they can usually assrape unsuspecting customers for a valve clearance check at 600 miles, right?

Absolutely not. Kawasakis are notorious for having tight exhaust valves, even at 600 miles. It's not that hard to measure, adjusting... that gets fun.

To each his own and you surely can't go wrong checking them, but I've never checked the valves on any street bike at 600 miles. I don't feel that's anywhere near enough time on the engine for notable changes.

Book recomends 15,000 miles but good question.

Has forum members experience shown different; can it depend on how hard ya drive or other factors (not intuitively obvious to the most casual observer)?

at 600 miles I did the oil/filter, lubed the chain, checked the chain tension, and adjusted throttle free play.

Other than that, I'm going by the book, once a year or xxxxx miles. I purchased the extended warranty (against better judgement) so there is 4 years total.

I already had one warranty claim. The speedo-glass cracked horizontally from the mode button half-way across. I suspect it from the morning temperatures during April

In the April mornings it was freezing (0 celcius), sometimes with frost.

Next service is at 4,000. Look at the brakes. Once a year or every 7,500 you should change the oil. Unless you operate in severe conditions. Is my point getting across?

and your point is to change the oil every 7,500 miles? You must be affected by that bovine disease.

Just for the record book recomends 15,000 on just valve check or adjustment.

But when it comes to maintenance a recomendation is just that "a recomendation";whatever that means to you....

I would opiniate that if you are very picky with performance you would not wait 15,000 miles to check valve clearance. Here opinions can fly... ;I would think 8,000 is a good time to check;or if ya have the ich whenever you like to....

I will be using synthetic eventually and don't mind extending oil/filter changes to 4,000 miles; but change once a year regardless myself.

isn't an opinion a wonderfull thing hehe.

I don't know who you are either....

My point is very few people would follow those guidelines. The factory recommendations are ok, assuming you also use the factory recommended shift points.

cool deal, thanks everyone... gonna do the oil change myself & move to synthetic ... any recommedations on that as far as anything to look out for when going to synthetic vs standard ?

i just stuck with standard on my 7r with no problems but have heard nothing but positive results from synthetics, so if it will help keep my $11,000 investment nice and tight, all the better.

thanks again

Rob

all my other bikes were bought used and I've only ever run Castrol gtx 10-40 in them with no issues.

bought the kawi and for the first service I used suzuki 10-40 with an sl rating (cheapest). For the cost of the synthetic I probably won't bother.

Take a whiff of Motul 300v. Anything that smells that good has got to be good for your engine.

I check the valves on all my bikes in the winter . Keep them in the house around 70-75* F. That temp is ideal for measuring valve clearance and bearings ect..

Besides what else are you going to be doing in the winter . Perfect time for bike checks . Roll that bad boy in the formal dining room and go at it .
