DOT race tires heat cycles

I have been using Pirelli Dragon Supercorsa DOT race tires at track days and on the street. Does anyone have any idea how many heat cycles they can endure before performance drops off? I know all of the cool, more well funded riders use tire warmers. Does this effectively reduce the number of heat cycles since the tires never really cool during the day? When I raced cars, you could see a difference in lap times after 2 heat cycles on most tires.

Second question. Does anyone know which Pirelli tires they use in World SuperSport? Dragon's, Diablo's?????????

I've run maybe 20 sets of Rennsports and I could not give you a clue on the heat cycle question. Too many variables. I run them till the front understeers. Tire warmers are a great idea for the track. No warm-up laps so you get a lot more quality track time. It absolutely makes them last longer by reducing heat cycles. They pay for themselves in no time.

Not only should the warmers be used for warm-up but they should also be used afterwards to help reduce the severity of the cool down cycle.

My expirience is that after 1 track day with four 30minutes sessions (with aprox 15-20minutes ( 7-8 laps )rides ) the tires are on next trackday off by 1 or 2 seconds on 1.42 lap. So after 170km and 33 timed laps i think next time will be not so comftorable to push on those times. Think that all dot race tires are really good only 1 track day or for racers 1 session aprox. 20laps.

With our team, we are actually able to get a set of Dunlops to last a 5 hour endurace race (medium or hard compound)... almost. Of course, they are basically beyond totally shot before the race is over (depending on the number of red flags). On the other hand, we usually get three or four sprint races (8 laps each) when using a softer compound and the warmers between races. Boils down to about 50 to 60 miles out of a sprint set and around 200 miles out of an endurance set.

Thanks for the info, everyone.

This is my dilemma. I went to my second track day this last weekend but I was disappointed in my results. I wound up turning the same lap times at my second track day as I did on my first track day. But I felt I was riding well and my new set-up seemed to make the bike easier to ride with virtually no shake even over bumps exiting turns. But I did have more issue with the rear spinning this time. I never had an issue with rear tire drive at the first track day. So all of you with more experience than me, was it my new set-up, my old tires or me that resulted in no gain? I tend to be one of those riders that will blame myself first, for a somewhat disappointing result. But judging by your earlier responses, the tires may have been an important factor.

This weekend, I wound up running the same set of tires that I ran at the first track day over a month ago. The tires were used race take off's to start with. They had 2 sprint races on them before I put them on the ZX. I think I ran 5 sessions on them the first track day. Then I put 1800 street miles on them between track days. They looked pretty shot before going to the track day and I had planned on changing tires at the track. But it rained in the morning and I decided to take the cheap way out and try to make the old tires last. I wound up getting 4 more sessions out of the tires.

Opinions, anyone? And please don't flame me because cord wasn't showing after 1800 miles of street riding. My straight line riding is generally pretty close to legal. I usually go faster only in the corners.

One track day, then street riding only. Bringing them back for another track day will not help you much and in my humble opinion, you're asking for trouble. But it depends on how hard you ride and on what track.

People put too much emphasis on heat cycling. Street tires are designed for almost unlimited cycles. SuperSport type DOT tires are similar. BIG difference is how much heat is generated. On the track, it is substanially higher than on the street. Henceforth, the sense in changing them regardless of tread-depth, cupping, etc... You will lose grip. How much and how comfortable you are with it, is an individual feel and not a standard rule.
