Bad PC almost Trashed my 10....well maybe almost

Well here goes the story....so i put a PC on my bike late thursday.....went in pretty easy.....only two connectors and the batery terminal....well here is when my problems started.....got it all installed and then put a zero map in it and set the TPS......so i took it for a quick ride and noticed that it would start to load up a little at idle....no big deal i thought...most of the time you have to adjust a PC at idle.....so i rode it down to my local speed shop.....i was going to get it dynoed to check the air fuel....no go...there sniffer was dead.....so i decied to just go out rideing....well after about 10 minutes of rideing i started noticeing it stumble.....(first red flag)...so i started to turn around for home and then she got realy realy bad.....i could not even keep it running at all.....and then she started somkeing pretty bad (white smoke) so since i was stoped at a red light i decided to turn it off.....to late it dies.....so i pushed her off the road and called my friends.....(owners of the speed shop)....and they tell me its fucked.....great....so here i am with a brand new zx10 that is more than likely FUBAR because of a bad PC....(im going to take it off and return it and replace the spark plugs (im sure there fucked) and change the oil and see how she runs......im thinking that the smoke was from the rings loading up with gas....because i can start it up now and there is no smoke....but when i ride it...she feels slugish almost like my plugs are way gone and she was a miss at idle.....anyone have any suggestions for me?

i'v heard that happen a few times, but in every case simply unplugging the PC gets everything back to normal. shouldnt be any permanent damage; maybe some fouled plugs at worst, tho i even doubt that. generally dynojet will warranty your PC if they determine it is a bad unit. this is of course all assuming it was the PC which caused the problem.

I managed to remove mine by turning the box counter clockwise while pushing the rubber intakes inward and lifting the upper right corner of the box until it comes out. Sorry about the description but its the best i can do.

I had a 2001 Gsxr 1000. I was trying to cut the wire to the red flashing fi light on cluster after installing aftermarket exhaust. Someone told me to cut the wrong one. I cut the wire and the black smoke flew. I reved a few times to see if it would stop. It did a little. So I rode it the black smoke started flyin again. Spitting and sputtering I get it back to the garage. I reinstall the wire and it still did for a little while but I rode it anyways give it a little hell and it quit smokin. I think I had it way to rich and fouled the plugs. Try to run it after reseting the computer. If it smokes a little no prob let the excess fuel burn up. Should be ok after a few miles. If not change plugs first step. ??? does the 10 have a factory mode you can put it in like the GSXR.

Did you download the updated map from the PowerCommander.com website? The original was done for the pre-production bikes. The production bikes ended up with a different stock ECU calibration, which required a different map for the PCIII. If you aren't using the UPDATED map, your bike will run exceedingly rich at idle.

I know this because I downloaded both and compared the two. The earlier pre-production map had much higher enrichment numbers at lower rpm/tps settings. I strongly suspect that this is your problem, as the symptoms you are describing point to an overly rich mixture, which probably fouled your plugs.

BTW, I have the PCIII installed on mine, with the updated map, and it runs very well.

Just noticed on :

http://www.powercommander.com/212-411.shtml

that there is a 'utility update' (firmware) for the ZX-10 w/PC3 USB:

"This utility corrects a poor idle and low speed running
condition that exists on some ZX10R and Vulcan 2000
Power Commander USB's. Run if your bike exhibits the
above symptoms. Running this utility on a bike that is not
affected will not cause a problem."

That, too. Forgot that I also installed that. Good catch, Rad Cow.

If the plugs are fouled and the bike has been running very rich, I would recommend that you change the oil, too. Running overly rich can wash down the cylinder walls and comtaminate the oil with fuel sometimes. Cheap insurance, IMO.

Good news. Glad to hear it. FWIW, I'm using the stock map and it runs fine, but I don't have the Muzzy's can.
