Gauge cluster I think I may be the dissenting opinion here, but I have no problem with the gauge cluster. The tach works fine for me. I have thought about this long and hard, and I actually rarely use the tach, except to watch for redline, and we have the shift light for that. In normal riding conditions, I adjust my engine speed by sound, road speed, conditions, type of riding I'm doing - the tach actually rarely figures into it. I like it and have no problem with it.

I've spent so much time watching the tach during break-in that I'm totally used to it. I guess it may be hard to pick up in my peripheral vision but I've never found that to be necessary anyway. The shift light is good enough for me.

I think the perfect gage array is something like this:
Along with the usual 'idiot' lights, a large sweep-needle analog tach (with the whole tach face that doubles as a programable shift light) flanked by two LCD screens. The left screen shows speed, avg speed, top speed, water temp, odo. The right screen shows time, fuel, trip odod1, trip odo2. The back lighting is adjustable, too. The right screen can be easily detached for the track.
Build it and every sportbiking fan will love you long time.

I love the new cluster... now.. I have to admint that if you put it beside the Ducati cluster it is a knock-off of, it doesnt look as good.. But I do like it...

I'm used to it at this point. Honestly, I rarely look at it, having too much fun watching the road in front of me. Then again, I am *not* using the bike to do freeway drones from place to place. Just fun rides on the twisty backroads.

That warning came on the analog tachs as well. Unfortunatley, I found the warning after the fact while making a special bracket for the gauges on my 1991 ZX-7. I learned the hard way to always set gauges face up.

ditto... although I did look at it when that unmarked police car passed me the going the other way on the twisties... oops! way too fast... oh well..

see what I men when I say 'street bikes'?...street rider usuer friendly gage ergos for street bikes ridden in the real world (not the track where gages are basically not used)...I would not want to wish any undeserving sportbiker a ticket at all, but shit happens....eh, I hope you 'get lucky' at least a few more times, but at the rate you're having fun its just a matter of time...but if you could 'see' your gages better, you could or even might ride accordingly and be able to 'adjust' your speed in time....but what do I know????....Bahahahahahahaha!!!!!

10R gauge cluster Has anyone attempted to run their bike without the gauge cluster plugged into the harness, and if so, did it run?

You mean, "did it run well without the speedo signal"?
Dunno, but interesting question.
BTW, I too am used to the tach now - until the sun hits the face of the LCD unit and I'm wearing my polarized faceshield and polarized sunglasses under it, then I can't see shit below the fairing.
And, I can tell by engine sound and the blur of the landscape how fast I'm turning the engine...

I do not refer to the tach that often, the shift light does just fine. The tach is a little difficult to read, but I can see the bars on the tach easily. The problem I have is that the numbers on the tach face are too small for me to pick up at a glance. I don't believe it is a digital vs. analog question. I can't pick up the numbers fast enough on the analog speedometer on a Ducati 998, either.

KZ - No, I mean will it run (normally, all RPM ranges) without the dash connected to the harness. Is there a speed signal that gets computed/conditioned/whatever in the dash that is subsequently sent to the ECU?
Freek - I don't have my 10R yet, and haven't poked around a 12R - are there similarities/parts interchangeability?
As far as the shift light goes, is it adjustable, and does it stay set even after shutting off the bike? I hear that the GSXR has an adjustable shift light, but it resets every time the bike is turned off. What a pain.
shift light is programmable, I believe in 250rpm increments (I read it in the owner's manual, but it's in the garage), from something like 9500 rpm all the way to 15,500 (I think), and it stays set at that figure even after you turn it off & restart.
I think that's how it works - if not, anyone jump in & correct me.

10rmotor, not much interchangable that i know of. u got me thinking that the guage plug dont look all that different. would be cool if i could fit the 10r guages on my 12 since it's so much smaller.
