Running the 10R without an exhaust canister

So I was wondering, since my buddy ran his 954 without an exhaust canister, will any damage occur to your engine if you run straight pipes? I know they do it in Moto GP, but we aren't talking Moto GP here. I would imagine that you get better midrange with the back pressure, and if the canister is excempt, the back pressure will truly be minimized. What about top end? Not that any of the current liter bikes needs to be revved hard to have astronomical power for the street.

Sounds cool though. But I would be afraid of some type of engine damage if it were my brand new bike.

Seems like the butterfly valve in the mid pipe would make sure the bike had some back pressure down low.

Tho the valve may change this, in my experience any engine with open headers runs like crap. Gotta idle it WAY high, like 2000rpm, and then is jsut generally lumpy and stuttery, at least until u reach the top end. I rode my 12 with open headers (1 ft past the collectors) for a month or so and it sucked. couldnt believe how smooth it ran once i got a pipe on there again. Same for my datsun that i ran without on a coupel short trips. Adjusting fuel would prolly help smooth things out a touch mind u. Besides, it's not like any of the aftermarket pipes have any backpressure to speak of, do they? they're just a straight thru shot.

I would imagine it's making less hp without the muffler/necessary backpressure for the way it's tuned stock.

I ran my 12 without a baffle had a Muzzy titanium with carbon can, went to the local car/motorcycle show cranked up the RPMs some and alot of heads turned my way...Then I had a couple of Harley dudes wanting to have a loud pipe competetion... I put the 12 in the rev limiter a couple of times and I was the winner!!!...They all said that the 12 sound stood out...

I love loud pipes but cannot buy something too loud out of respect for my neighbors. I was just wondering if it might damage the engine at all. Most likely not, but you would loose alot of midrange.

I had an RR with a D&D exhuast. Damn it was loud. For one thing, no one ever attempted to side swipe me on the highway (they could hear the bike before seeing it).
