Good timing: I replaced mine about a half hour ago. A small, adjustable oil filter wrench (Auto Zone, Pep Boys, etc.) does the trick. Watch out for the header pipes, which will be hot if you're doing the job correctly.

Thanks;went to advance auto parts store last night but they were closed before I got there; was wondering if they would have something for such a small oil filter. Hard to get a good grip on filter cause it is stuck between header pipes
Ninja 12_R2000:
Header pipes do not need to be removed;just be ready to have oil over them as location of filter is above headers. Wipe off best you can and let excess burn while you check for leaks worked for me. Might be way to use oil solvent of some kind to clean mess. Open for suggestions.

I did mine at 200 for the first one - shoulda been 100 miles, but, hey, I had to go to work. The manual says 600 miles for the first, then every 7.5k after.
Putting tinfoil over the headers didn't really help - the watercooler for the oil got in the way of a nice job, and I ended up with oil on the collector and on the watercooler.
To answer the first question, get a $1.99 oil filter cap - it's driven with a 3/8 ratchet, and I used a 9" extension.
I had to take the lowers off to do this, and you need a 4mm allen wrench for that. The drain plug is 17mm.

Thanks. Now all I need is the bike. If this goes on much longer, I'll need an oil change!
