My friend has Yamaha Thunderace '97. It has only 1 bulb working on low beam. Damn, it looks terrible. Everyday someone tell my friend to change the "dead" bulb.
YZF-R1 doesn't have this shitty option, so I can't believe that KAWA did it...

Ok, here's the truth:

Check both videos CBR1000RR and ZX-10R to see lights!
It seems that KAWA have 'em in the right way, Honda - no way.

6RR and the 636 are the same way......single headlight on is what the masses wanted...soo most of the OEM's gave them what they wanted.

I think the Z1000 is the same way.

My personal opinion......I like having 2 lights on all the time.....and, I run with High beams on during the day.

Come-on now... It does look kinda cool.

XL - So you're the dweeb who runs around like that all the time! Even when I'm riding and in front of guys with H-beams on all the time, it's annoying.... JMO - They should only be used when you feel the most vunerible. Ripping around in the mountains and/or heavy traffic, and/or passing, etc.. But leaving them on all the time just pisses people off. I think there was a pretty good article on this in Motorcyclist or Sportbike last year. Their opinion I believe was similar to mine. But it is just an opinion.

welll.......If you talk to most cops......they will probably tell you that they run with High beams on too......Higher visibility.....thats what I'm looking for.
I find that I am seen less with my low on, thats over a course of about 20 years of observation....sorry if it annoys other people, but #1 comes first when Im on 2 wheels.
Be seen or get run over......sorry boys and girls.....just my opinion.

I find that tying a pair of cats together by the tail and slinging them over my shoulder is one of the best ways to attract attention while riding on the street. However, they tend to bounce off the taxicabs during passing, so I don't do it too often.

On the cover of motorcyclist the zx10r only has one headlight on but thats exactly how it's suppose to work. What gets me is their new modification of having the exhaust cannister on the left side of the bike. OOOOOppps, looks like a photo blunder.

Xtremelean, what "masses"? I do not know anyone who only wants one low beam on. BTW. I thought I had seen somewhere that the ZX10 only has one light on high beam also. Is that true? I think the quote was that it changes sides from low to hi beam.

Not ta piss on anyones parade here but yer "use" of high beams time that is acceptable pretty much defines the usual commute to and from work - in SoCal at least.

Consider me guilty and yes I've been ticketed for that before.

20 years ago... 30 years ago.... Sheeez... we're not counting back in the days of candles as headlights. A 2 cell Maglite would run down the charging systems on those lame 6V bikes (like my ol' 250 XL S w/ the 23" front tire). My 35w bulb on my '90 KDX is brighter then those things were.

All kidding aside, count me in that group that runs high beams during all daylight riding. That even applied when I ran LP 55/100w bulbs in my '97 7R (with an occasional set of 90/130w) and the PIAA Super Whites in my 12R. Never got pulled over, but than again, I do live in Arkansas. We just got electricity a few years ago.

On the other hand, maybe KB's right. Over the past 6 years or so, I've just run high beams on the twisties. Since that's all I ride 95% of the time. All 95%, 130,000+ miles over the past six years.... of the time.

Oh well then. Never mind.

My Z1000 uses one lens on low, both on high.
BUT each bulb only has one filament, so on hi beam what is really on is one low beam and one high beam. It uses H-7 bulbs on both sides, which are single filament bulbs.

One of my winter projects is to try H-4 bulbs in both sides, but as of now I have not came across a pair of sockets from a ZX12R ZX9R,ZX7R,or similiar to wire up and try.

My concern is that each reflector is set at a specific angle and having the dual filament bulb won't accomplish a dual low beam and dual hi beam focus.

If anyone have the harness I need to test this out please email me.

I will get the answers.

BTW, Ducati used a single bulb on the 916 because it had a punny charging system. It would run the battery down just driving around town on hi beam. I think that the Japs followed just as they did with the under tail exhaust.

Ozzy - all good point. I would bet that the reflectors are different. And using one light is less of an impact on the charging system, which is loaded pretty good running the FI.

Maybe one point I add; Where I ride, when I ride, and especially how I ride(extremely brisk pace.....), I don't like drawing anymore attention to myself than necessary. Full leathers & pucks, Toes always on the pegs, Blazing stars & stripes eagle helmet, etc. I'm a cop magnet (ya know, kinda like a chick magnet...). Every waking moment I ride, I am in complete defensive mode. So I just personally don't believe in the hi-beams on approach at all times in making a big difference in keeping me safe(r).

Though a question for you brainiacts out there - Bulb life, alternator life, battery life; would it not be less running beams a blazin all the time???

Aren't opinions great?

...stilll TWO lowbeams is better than ONE lowbeam...two lowbeams ON have been around around since two headlight systems have been around...I don't think there's any quantifiable reason to think that two lowbeam lights ON will make you a 'better' magnet than a single low beam ON...and I think two lowbeams ON on a twisty road with oncoming traffic will light up the road ahead of you better, will it not?...if anything, cops who aren't in the know about motorcycle lighting systems might look at you MORE because they may think that you have a headlight out

If you are riding a sportbike, you are considered to have either committed a crime and got away with it, or will shortly commit a crime. You are always guilty in the eyes of the police.
