Lowering for racing
Hi guys,
I have my first race coming up in Feb and an looking to lower the bike as much as possible, I have dogebones that allow 2 or 3" for the rear.
If I go max at 3", should I drop the front 3" in the tree?
I'm worried that if it comes up and goes down hard I wont have sufficient travel left to take the impact. I have extensions set at 7" over stock.
Any issues with dropping the front that far?
Also, is there a sidestand that I can buy from the wreckers that will work when the bike is lowered, ZX6, 7 or 9 perhaps?
Thanks,
NOS Rob

rob,
i'd slide the forks up an in the front, then strap it another inch. Do NOT slide the forks up 3" IMO.
several choices on shortened sidestand; either buy an aftermarket adjustable (Spencer Cyle has em) or mod yr OEM to be adjustable (cheapest solution) or get an OEM from a yard and shorten it.

Thanks entropy, unfortunately straps are not allowed in aussie dragracing, don't ask my why, you just can't use them.
If it is not wise to slide the forks up past 1" and I can't use straps.......... what do I do? Re-do the forks, spacers and shorten the travel? Is there any info on this procedure?
It will be hard to find a OEM ZX12 sidestand, any other bikes the same?

rob,
there is a way to shorten the forks, but i don't know the details.
as fas the sidestand, you can turn yr current one into an adjustable with a little work, or just spring for an adj for $170 US

btw, where in aussie-land are you?

I live in sunny Sydney.
In Febuary next year Australia will finally have a World class Dragstrip and it is only about 15 min from my home!!
http://www.wsid.com.au
I am entering my first ever race, ever, the Australian Summer Nationals.
May God have mercy on me and my clutch basket as I don't think I will have a billet basket by then. (could be squeezing over 100 on nos by then)
I found out how to lower the forks, Schnitz sell kits, nothing more money can't fix.
Things I need most are, billet basket, 51-52 T sprocket, M/T shootout tyre and a 2 1/4" fork lowering kit.
Any sponsors out there want to help a battling aussie??

Since you cant use a strap.. you'll have to lower the bike through the trees or internally with lowering blocks. You can safely go about 1 3/4 on the triple tree, then get the lowest sidewall tire you can find... which is a 120/55. That will give you another 1/2" or so or 2 1/4 in the front.
You can modify your forks internally.. but that would not be good for street riding (if you do any)
Here's a pic of internally lowered forks vs stock ones.

The back end is abit easier. Just buy some fixed or adjustable legs.

The fixed ones are cheap.. you can even make them yourself. The adjustable ones like shown above run $35 or so. Or you can get the turnbuckle style ones for about $120.
A shorter length shock will help lower the bike too.

Dr... Nah I just stole those pics for a visual. I think the kit runs $75 from Schnitz. My suspension guy said about $100 to install including fluids/seals
