How can you tell if you've spun a bearing?

OK, all of this oiling stuff has me paranoid. Can someone tell me how I can tell if I've spun a bearing in my motor? Does it make noise, or can you just tell if your mph is off?

both! and the best way is to pull you clutch cover off and drain your oil. To see if there is an "Gold" in there!!! copper flakes actually.

So, if my mph is off, but I don't hear any noise, I should just blame it on the altitude of the last 2 tracks that I raced at? 2100 and 2700 feet.

OK, I'm starting to feel better now. Whew!

MPH will be down, if you see more than 5mph loss in the 1/4, pull the pan. It takes 15 minutes to remove the pan. Draining the oil doesn't always show you conclusive results, as in the case of my silver bike the oil looked fine but when we pulled the pan LOOK OUT! Crazy bearing material everywhere!

PULL THE PAN!!! Rac4it is 10000% correct. Your motor may not make a noise with spun bearings. But by the time you hear a noise it is TOO LATE!! major damage........

Think about it,,,,,,a drill turns between 2500-4500rpms and only takes a second to make a drill bit smoke from the heat. If your engine is turning at 11,000rpms (3-5x's drill speed), all it takes is a moment of no oil on those bearings to let that crank touch and your bearings are GONE!!!

My oil filter came loose and I shut the bike right down.......There "IS A PILE OF BEARING SHAVINGS" in my pan. But, when I drained the oil i think i saw 3 flakes of copper. Engine made no noise while ideling.

LOOKING IN THE PAN IS THE ONLY SURE WAY TO KNOW!!!!!

I'm already working on getting one, Mike. The Coby Adams pan is calling my name. I just need a sidewinder before I can make that work.

yea that is what bearing material looks like, as seen from my green 12r which did not have a complete engine failure, that is what it looked like after losing power on the dyno. No oil light. No weird sounds. Ran smooth, just lost power. Note the time and order of the runs

This is what we saw, 190rwhp (what?), then another pull 174rwhp (hmm something isn't right here...) and finally 156rwhp (holy shit dude turn it off before it explodes)!

FWIW I rode the bike home from the dyno. Ran fine, no weird sounds. Drained the oil, which looked reasonably normal, but when we pulled the pan we struck gold (well, copper anyway).

OK, while I'm here crapping my pants hoping that I won't see little copper pieces in my oilpan, let's talk worst case scenario. Let's assume that I do have a spun bearing. How much would that cost to fix?

150??? where the hell did you buy your bearings!! shit I got took, mine were 250 for the set. Wannabe email me if you do have this done, I have done a couple of 12 motors and have quoted 3-4 more for me to do this winter. but I would be glad to help you out!
madmike1209@mchsi.com

but before you give yourself a stroke! pull the pan and dont worry about it untill you actually see the copper. I have thought I spun another bearing due to speed being down and actually I was short shifting, and when I ran another pass my mph came back up. weather and altitude have a huge amount to do with your HP your building = speed your running in the 1/4!

OK, boys. I'm sure you're anxiously waiting by your computers for me to post the results of my oil pan excursion. Long story short, I'm still safe. No bearing pieces in the pan.

Thanks for all your help, guys. Even though it turned out that I didn't have to do it afterall, it was worth it so I can actually sleep tonight.

I need to buy me a sidewinder!

Looks good, you're in the clear thankfully. Kinda too bad though I was looking forward to that +5mm stroker with 86mm pistons you were going to build
