Tech help required!

Anyone here have experience with nitrous and 600 cc engines? I've got a 1998 ZX-6r that I've always thought about adding the gun to. Will the bottom end hold up? Will I need to do any internal mods? Am I crazy? (don't answer that!) Any info would be greatly appreciated!

nitrous 6

Lots of people think about it, but few do it because it's easier, cheaper (in the long run), and more reliable to trade up to a bigger engined bike instead.
I personally find trying to extract a lot of hp from a small engine rewarding, but it isn't cheap. The theory is exactly the same as a bigger bike. A small shot will be fine, but a full-monty nitrous motor needs building from the ground up with all the goodies, pistons, rods, everything.

I was just thinking of a small system, just enough power for the odd thrill ride. I'm probably going to get a 9R for my everyday ride and turn the 6R into the play bike.

I have heard the guys say that you can give a little on stock motor but if you wanna do it right you have to build it up!! I can't answer your bottom end questions in detail but I wanted to tell you about a NOS ZX9R that I raced at the strip.

I was stomping him all the way down the track on my hubby's stock motor Busa....Shortly after the 1/8 mile he hit the button and leaped right beside me. I ran a 9.71 and he ran a 9.73....Not bad for a ZX9R at all.

I am telling you that just as an example. If you are looking for all out HP then I would just look into a bigger bike (My 2 cents). You can only get the extra power from NOS after 2nd gear(to be safe) and you would get less HP from spending the $$$ in the ZX6 vs. just buying a ZX12 or a Busa....Now this from an avid drag racers point of view!!!

If its just your first NOS bike, you wanna play and you've got the extra cash then WTF!!!! Go for it!!!!

I think that you would get the same rush if you just skipped the ZX9 and moved to the Big Dog vs. the NOS for the ZX6!

This is a bike that I thought would be neat to build for quite a while. zx-6r, ported head, oversize pistons, 3-4" cheater arm and a little bit of spray. If they have got the 600SS running in the 9's then this bike ought to fly. I have heard that they have the 600SS bike are making around 115-120 HP. With the above mods and a small shot you could probably get around 140-150 easily. I say go for it. With the money you could make with this bike you could buy a new one in no time

I guess a SS type motor would be another option, flowed heads, cams, pistons and rods and the 6R is supposed to be good for 120-125hp, that would be fun! I want to keep the bike as close to stock looking so I think that the swingarm is out. The main idea is to build it so that I can still take it to the track and run some hot laps then go next door and run a quarter in the low 10s range. The NOS was just an idea because its relatively easy and cost effective. It would be something different too, ya know?

you can put a 25hp shot on that bike and it be fine...we put a 50hp shot on a zx6c/d model just to see if it would live and we couldn't get it to break, so you will be fine...i would suggest that you buy a good ignition system so that you can control the nitrous...have fun!!!

Some details on the ignition upgrades would be helpful bbwc. And if you could steer me in the right direction with the NOS system specs that would be great too! Thanks a bunch!

we installed a dyna 2000 on that bike...the 2000 allows you to retard the ignition a few degrees when needed and also allows you to advance the timing when you are not using the nitrous...the kit that we recommend would be the nitrous express system...i would also recommend you start as low as you can go with a 18/16 jetting and once you know that everything is working then you could step it up to a 20/18 jetting...we are nitrous express distributors and can get you that kit if needed...have fun!!!

Thanks! What is the price range for the parts and how intensive is labour? Could a good home mechanic do this job, or is it better to pay a pro to do it?

the NX kit is about 600-650 and the ignitionwill run you about $200...so you are looking at about $850 or so in parts...if i were you i would pay a professional mechanic to install the kit to make sure that it is done right...nitrous is not very forgiving and if you make a mistake with the initial setup it could cost you that motor that's in that bike...at our shop for a setup like what you are planning to do is around $1000-1100 out the door, setup and ready to ride...
