Suspension setup questions?
I know suspension setup is important to put all that horsepower to the ground. What I don't know is how to properly set it up with a 6 over arm. Will the rear shock have to be re-valved and replace the stock spring? I know rider weight plays into the equation.
Has anyone had their stock shock re-valved and spring replaced. Some have opted to go with an aftermarket shock.
I'd like to hear from fellow drag racers on how to setup the suspension

Yes you need a aftermarket shock or get your stock one revalved....and change your spring for the extra lenght arm........OR oyu can get the shock special made to the specs you need...weight ...arm and where you cna use the stock lower links to keep the geometry correct. This would be a short shock.

man o' man Kz, asking folks about rear suspension is about like asking about religion. Some folks like a soft spring, lots of travel, some go 180 degrees the other direction, and both camps say the other's way won't get you to heaven.
What seems to be working for me is a penske shock, sprung heavy specifically for my fat ass and a 6" arm. It sags about 25mm w/me on the bike vs me off the bike. When launching it compresses much less than my stock shock, so I guess I am NOT in the "lots of travel" camp.
When I went to a 10" arm, I put more preload into it to keep about the same sag i had w/the 6" arm. The tire does not hit the undertail at all anymore.
Coming off the line, if I snap the clutch out and hard/fast roll into WOT, it doesn't wheelie. If I delay getting the clutch fully engaged, it will wheelie about 30'? off the line. Obviously I'm still learning so take everything I say with a BIG grain of salt.

Lets keep this thread going guys!
On zx12 girls bike, it still has the stock shock which we haven't had it re-valved or the spring replaced. Now that she has a 6 over arm, the suspension doesn't feel right. I'm guessing here that you need to have the rear suspension squat hard an come up slow?.
Currently the screw on the top shock( compression?) is set hard and the bottom screw(rebound?) set 3 clicks from soft and it still feels springy. I believe if the suspension is setup correctly, she will be able to leave the line harder than what she has been. She already said it is not easy to launch her 12 in it current state.

kzz, You need to turn the spring adjuster with a spanner wrench at least 3 clockwise turns then turn the compression/rebound to max...On my 2000, I have the shock spring turned 3 times compression/rebound 1 out from max with a stock swingarm...
All of the Pros bikes I have sat on were like sitting on a rigid frame, but with a touch of compression...Rickey Gadsons 60" and ShootOut bikes are set up stiff...
I figure if it works for them then it will work for me!!!
By the way Ken, buy 6 1087 clutch springs from RonAyers and put them in!!!...Try it, I bet you Angie will really like them!!!...They are a little shorter in length then the Muzzy springs...BUT, what the 1087s did for me was give me more control of the clutch, cutting out the abrupt wheelies!!!...Try it, you'll like it...

ok, that's the second mention of the 1087 springs. What are those from, and what year?

BA... The 1087 springs are the '98 ZX9 springs, which also come standard in the 2001/02/03/04 ZX12...The 1087 springs are a touch longer but thicker metal diameter making them stiffer than the 2000 ZX12 clutch springs...
KZZ1, also get a clutch hub from a 2002/03/04 ZX12, the oil passages get plenty of oil to the clutches!!!

One thing I noticed last time out at the track w/my 12 is when my friend rode my bike we had to make some changes right before the first run.First,we softened the suspension all the way in the rear, and left rebound the same, slow,he only weighs 135 or so,and the bike looked too tall for him,he's about 5'5",then we left the strap alone,by not pulling the front end down, the shock worked moch better,at 64-65 inches long,w/the forks 1.5 inches through the tubes plus the lack of traction down the track, this was the best set up.Consistant mid 1.4 short times with shinko tire at that. The set up for me would be a little different.
