Mo Faster!
Hey Guys (and gals),
Got my first <1.5 60' this weekend at Santa Pod, a 1.47 on the way to a 9.28 @ 149 (1270 @ 66").
Questions are...
1) If we fitted nitrous how much is safe to use with the 1270 pistons (not the nitrous versions)
2) How much quicker could we go with this amount of nitrous do ya think?

1. Only one way to find out...start at 20 and see what it looks like on a dyno
2. Alot

Congratulations on the new short time. I think you'll find that with some practice at the longer wheelbase it will be a common occurance!
Are you running a wet kit or dry kit, that is the question? I'll answer both.
Answer 1a) about +100rwhp using a decent wet kit will hold up if you jet it properly and have a safe a/f ratio.
Answer 1b) about +60rwhp using as dry kit, I wouldn't go beyond using a single #40 jet DRY for safety reasons. Obviously you could use more but you asked about "use safely".
Answer 2) at your current wheelbase (66") you should see .40 to .50 reduction in ET using the DRY kit, that is what I gained. That 9.28 @ 149 will quickly turn into 8.8 @ 159 on the dry pill if you can grab it on the 1-2 shift, shouldn't be a problem at that wheelbase. If you're running a wet kit you'll probably need a progressive controller to take advantage of upwards of +100rwhp like with the Muzzys Stealth configuration. But if you're spraying around +50 ~ +60 rwhp the gains should be the same.
Here come the 8s!!!

Not using any kit at the moment, just pump gas, but considering the Muzzy Stealth with progressive controller for next year, especially if it's possible to get below 8.5 with the pistons we have. I was a bit concerned that this would not be possible without the thicker crown "nitrous" 1270 pistons. If we could do this it would make us competitive in the UK Superstreet class (like Shootout...but slower ).
We only get to what you would consider a dragstrip once or twice a year so I don't get much practice. Mostly we run quarters on old airfields (like Maxton maybe?) so there isn't enough grip to run good 60s. But if we can make the bike competitive we would go to the good tracks more often.
Anyone else running below 8.5 with the Pro kit?

All motors will survive on spray....How long it will survive is inversely proportional to the amount you spray
I personally spray a Dry 75shot on a stock motor....some say its impossible....although ive gone through dozens of bottles of impossible. All bikes are different. I started with a small shot (about a 20 pill) and worked my way up from there to where I am now...dozens of dyno runs....wideband 02 sensors to monitor A/F ratio..countless map changes. It works!
Start small....and build up....or start big and hope itll hold.....both options will get you down the track quicker

With the proper amount of fuel you shouldnt be worried about the pistons...but maybe the rods first. Pistons are gonna take the beating no matter what, even stock pistons will live as long as you dont see detonation. You should be able to make more power than you can use effeciently with a wet kit and the pistons you have. A taller piston will require a spacer and will be heavier, making less power on motor, but will be "stronger" than the regular 1270 pistons. Plenty of people spray big shots with the regular style JE pistons. If Im not mistaken Rickey G said he made 306 RWHP on his 60 inch bike with 100 HP worth of hose and a 1361 with billet rods. Im sure he is using the regular style JE pistons. Im gonna use 15 to 1 JE's in my busa and Im spraying 100HP too.....
One more thing, I would advise you to put the nozzles on the wet kit in the cyl head, instead of mounting them inside the airbox. Just less chance of fuel puddling or something going wrong.....if a nozzle turns on top of the stack, boom chicky boom boom....

OK, guys, so what do we need to kick some Brit Busa ass....(8.7s most of em)?
1. Muzzy Progressive Stealth kit looks good to me...any alternatives? Any experience with this kit?
2. Bottle blanket? Do these things have thermostatic cutouts? I've seen a bottle go bang and don't want that, but it's only in the 70s most of the time here, occasionally 80s and rarely 90s.
3. PC3R we've got...how do you retard the ignition ONLY while the gas is on? We want to run the bike without gas at some events, swapping maps is easy but do you run retarded in first gear or what?
4. What is a "pill"? The jet that goes in the nitrous solenoid? I've used nitrous once before, on a ZX11 and it melted the pistons in a few runs, but we didn't have dynos back then!
Thanks for the help

Not at all....leaded fuel fouls up 02 sensors...but nitrous wont.
02 sensors react to the amount of unburnt FUEL in the exhaust...the chemical reaction between the element and the fuel produces a minute electrical discharge...this is why 02 sensors read in millivolts.
nitrous isnt adding any fuel...its adding significant amounts of oxygen..which allows much more fuel to burn during the combustion process...hence resulting in a lean condition without adding more fuel.
as for your other questions
1. Muzzy kit is pretty badass...but pricey. if money is no object...id certainly recommend it If you want to spray above 75hp or so....a muzzy wet kit is certainly the way to go.
2. Bottle heaters are indeed effective...however only if its really cold out. if you implement a bottle heater..it can easily cause your relief valve to blow (the bottle itself wont blow...so dont worry). You would need a pressure gauge installed on the bottle to monitor it while you had the heater running. Most bottle heaters sold are for 10 and 15lb bottles..and get VERY VERY hot...not designed for a small 2lb bottle. Id contemplated getting a small heating pad (like one you would use on your body) and retrofit it to work on the bike...but its hot as shit in florida again..and I have no need
3. you have two options here. Schnitz racing sells the EFIR box...it allows you to wire it up to activate with the nitrous solenoid fires....the box itself retards timing to your specifications (even does it progresively over an amount of time you specify). Your only other option is to retard timing at WOT only...but that would hurt you when not spraying.
4. when they refer to pill..its just another word for jet.
Good luck!

also keep in mind you have a turbo bike....you will achieve SIGNIFICANTLY more power from a particular nitrous jet than a normal NA bike due to its cooling reaction alone.
As a comparison....most turbo supra guys around here pick up easily 125 - 150hp on a setup supposed to make only 75 - 100hp on an NA car.
Your intake temps will drop quite substantially when you are on the spray.
