16-44 4th gear@11k help
Im going thru the traps in 4th gear between 10.8-11k indicated on stock tac. The bike bounces off the rev limiter at an indicated 12.5. What gearing should I get to finish in 4th at 12.3-12.5K? 16-45, 16-46, 17-48? any ideas would greatly be appreciated!!

well, I can't let ya hang like this Santa.......... 24 views, no replies.
Sounds like you need 'about' 10% more RPM. I'd suggest an equivalent of +3 in the back as a starting point. I honestly don't think +2 is enough, but admittedly, I'm only using my testing as a basis.
Keeping in mind the chain length vs wheelbase, I'll let you do the final math. That +3 in the back is close to -1T up front. (actually closer to 2.6T)
so either a 15T up front, which will NOT hurt your chain, or add in the back and increase the chain length.
all of this is in lieu of us changing your riding style
you could change tires too. what size and brand are you using? My 190 tire added a couple of hundred rpm to my runs.

15T up front won't hurt your chain? Yeah, I'm starting to think that too. A lot of guys with the old KZ's at the dragstrip are running 14T up front.

some 9R's came from the factory with a 530 chain, and they use a 14T....... (not that chain width should have anything to do with it...)

Not 100% sure but I'm thinking he's asking about a ZX12R not a KZ? Although a 15 tooth may not "hurt" the chain in my experience it most definitely will increase wear as well as dig into the underside of the swingarm on a ZX12R.
Also note that personal experience running a 16-tooth front for extended periods of time has worn completely thru the plastic chain guides and left impressions in the aluminum on the swingarm itself on the underside, something not normally visible unless you remove the swingarm. The chain diging into the swingarm can't be a good thing for either!

A smaller sprocket up front has a tendancy to "jump" the countershaft on more powerful bikes. 16 is the smallest I would go on the countershaft.

good points Berg and TB............ I had forgotten about the possibility of the chain touching the swingarm, but I'd guess that the size of the rear sprocket also has a little to do with that.....
I think Wannabe mentioning the KZ was just like me mentioning the 9R, ...as a general rule a 14 and 15T is ok for the chain,........BUT, you're right, you've got to check your clearance!!! Good call.
