Houston Raceway 12/9 - 1361 results

great weather if a bit nippy (50's), too many cars, shade tree mechanics oiling down the track again & again, but the forced waits were good for my clutch...
1st pass: 9.283 @ 149.86
last pass: 9.280 @ 150.50

real uneven results in between, but little by little I'm getting used to the 1361/6"arm. Even with my 230lb suited weight, the 1361/arm seems to get me down the track.

I am NOT getting WOT in 1st fast enough, but there is hope for teens, maybe faint hope, but practice - practice - practice...

I don't wanna bore you but since you insist

first pass
60' 1.573
330' 4.034
1/8 6.040
1/8 mph 122.37
1000' 7.788
1/4 9.283
1/4 mph 149.86

last pass (9th)
60' 1.576
330' 4.036
1/8 6.042
1/8 mph 122.51
1000' 7.787
1/4 9.280
1/4 mph 150.50

don't let the consistency of these 2 passes fool you, the other 7 were all over the map; i am still trying to figure out what works (e.g. lay over tank on launch), what doesn't (e.g. launch at 5000rpm).

MM : if you send me that map, I'll blow it in and try it this fri (do 3 passes with my current map then the rest with your tweaked map). Thx a million for helping.

Yep, it does have the snorkle

Oh yah, my battery situation is still a problem for hot lapping. I had to push offa the track last Sun when I stalled it during dry hop. Stocker battery works great when cool but... I know I should be cooling down between passes, but this is not always possible. In 2002 I will run S/ET and P/ET to get more runs. I'd hate to get bumped out because of a dead battery. Since we seem to have hit a dead end trying to find a super battery which fits in the stock slot, I'm thinking of a helper battery (dry cell) which I could put in the trunk, wire it in parallel. Whatta you think?

running MT MCR2 tire; am down 2" front & back, will try 2.5" front & back this weekend, but don't want to burn another hole in my undertail.

I would not run a seperate battery the will probably work agenst each other during charging, Hmmmm.. you know what you can wire in a switch on the spare battery! and then use it for starting only! that way when the oem gets hot you can use the other, I would use the Oddessy battery(FBG), I think that should work well, Ill help you if you need the design, Im working with Interstate to help spark some intrest in developing a new battery for heavy duty starting applications! cool talk with you soon, Ill send that map to you tonight! cya

Mike,
I liked the idea of a switched 2 battery system, but when it occured to me that a battery prob weighs 12-14 lb... yikes! I am going to take out my stocker and see exactly what the possibilities are in that cavity. Do a cavity search! Yeah!
looking fwd to getting the MM-tweaked map. Right now its raining (again) but Fri is supposed to be sunny, time to try out yr map. If you get me to 151mph, I will send you someting tasty from Texas (hint - NOT a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader).

Karl, a 1500cc busa ridin friend of mine has the same problem as you. He installed another battery in his trunk. Not sure how he has it wired but it cured his problem. I'll ask him.

bergie, it is because of the added crank from the big Kit in these bikes, more compression to turn over after a few times it is very hard on the batteries, now on your stock motor you will mever notice this problem!

Ken, this is a good possibility; but rather than a second battery in the trunk, maybe just put a single, more powerful one in the trunk. Use an Odessy (dry cell) so it could be mounted sideways???????

hmmmmmm???????

I aint' stupid, I'm just dumb!!

Alright, I have absolutely NO experience with full race bikes, nor any BB Kaws or Suzi's, but, I do have a question about this starting problem.

Why do you guys say it's a small battery problem?
The frequent mention of heat and cool-down time leads me to think of a weak starter. (not enough torque, frequently caused by excessive heat and high compression, etc.)

So, knowing that an extra battery will 'overcome' a weak starter, I have to ask, has anyone tried putting some kind of heat shield around the starter?
Some heat resistant material around it, and/or a metal shield perhaps?
Just curious.......

Don't flame me too bad, ok?

BTW - Nice runs on the bike man!!! Low 9's!! Wooohoooo!!!

I am NOT a good or experienced rider, but the 1361 has so much low end hp/torque, that along with the arm, its MUCH easier to ride quickly than stock.

Tonight its back to the track, jack, and see if I can get the low 1.5 60's, 3.9 330's that are needed to get my fat ass into 9-teens.

I had the same thoughts, BA. The starter doesn't seem to be in a particularly hot spot though. Of course, all of the pulling up in line may heat it up pretty good unless he's pushing it. I seem to recall a small gap underneath the starter. Perhaps enough room for some insulation to be wrapped around it.
Here's another idea. Perhaps his static timing is set a little too high at idle. Less timing will make an engine spin easier. Then again, the computer may retard it for cranking purposes. Some high end race car ignitions have this function. You got a PC3R, Karl? Either way, backing off the timing could help you with your problem. I'll bet Doug M could shed some insight on the computer.

timing - hard HOT startin

Krex & BA:
I have a PC3r and its all 0's anywhere near 0% throttle/1000rpm. I could go minus numbers (retard) at 0-1500rpm, 0-2% throttle?????? you guys think that would help? No starting problem last night, even doing 4 passes pretty much back to back, but it was in 50's.

Last night was perfect weather conditions, but left lane had traction problems down track unless I stayed in a very narrow groove(i sure didn't). Like the gentleman I'm not I gave ZXAlan the r lane all night cause he was determined to get 9.4's in 2001 and last night was his last chance. he did

I got one good pass, my personal best: 9.189 @ 151.44. none of the others were clean. Hey, i'm not bitching that i couldn't back it up, that'll come

60' 1.559
330' 3.982
1/8 5.972
1/8 mph 123.47
1000' 7.707
1/4 9.189
1/4 mph 151.44

Thx Angi, I appreciate your optimism, but Team Fat Ass is realistic, so 9.000000? possible but not likely, although with a little weight loss and a little hp gain, hmmmmmm

We have no white stuff here and I will miss it on Christmas Day
