TFA West scores Win #2!!!
I posted this on the ZX-12 part of bikeland, but I figured that I would repeat it here.
I went to Sacramento yesterday to race in the 7th annual NMRA Northern Challenge. I had a great time! Unfortunately, it rained in the morning. I think that kept the numbers down. There were only 4 people running in Super Gas.
The goal going in was to kick butt in Super Gas. I made a last minute decision to run in Pro ET also so that I could have some extra runs to figure out how to slow the bike down to the 9.90 index. It turned out that short shifting at 11K rpm did the trick. I ended up qualifying #1 with a perfect 9.900 run. Then I went on to win the race!!!
Ever have one of those days when everything was just on? That was yesterday for me. I figure that if I keep at it, those 'perfect' days will happen more often.

They were so stoked that I made that perfect 9.900 run in qualifications that they gave me this hat during the riders meeting as an extra prize. Needless to say, this is absolutely my favorite hat right now.

This is the plaque I earned. This is the first plaque/trophy I've gotten in drag racing. The other time I won, I only got cash. So, this plaque is extra pimp for me. I just hope that it's not my last.

And, since this is a dragbike site, y'all will most likely want to see my time slips. Here are my numbers during qualifications:
Run #1 Super Gas Qualifiication
Reaction: 0.414
60-ft: 1.608
330-ft: 4.208
1/8-mile: 6.358
1/8-mph: 114.460
1000-ft: 8.228
1/4-mile: 9.836
1/4-mph: 140.361
This run was just a c-hair too fast, but I was happy to see that my reaction times were there today. It's like sending your first drive on the golf course long and straight. It builds confidence for the rest of the day.
Run #2 Pro ET Qual
Reaction: 0.473
60-ft: 1.738
330-ft: 4.323
1/8-mile: 6.480
1/8-mph: 113.829
1000-ft: 8.357
1/4-mile: 9.979
1/4-mph: 139.72
I did this run exactly the same, but spun the rear badly. The first run was in the left lane, and this one was in the right. This showed that there was a lot less traction in the right. This is where I went, "Mental Note: Go half a psi lower if you're gonna run in the right lane."
Run #3 Super Gas Qualifiication
Reaction: 0.411
60-ft: 1.688
330-ft: 4.411
1/8-mile: 6.634
1/8-mph: 111.496
1000-ft: 8.536
1/4-mile: 10.176
1/4-mph: 137.531
Once again, I was on fire at the line. I ended up missing a shift on this run.
Run #4 Pro ET Qual
Reaction: 0.478
60-ft: 1.791
330-ft: 4.409
1/8-mile: 6.567
1/8-mph: 114.063
1000-ft: 8.442
1/4-mile: 10.075
1/4-mph: 140.264
Run #5 Super Gas Qualifiication
Reaction: 0.376
60-ft: 1.620
330-ft: 4.237
1/8-mile: 6.393
1/8-mph: 114.161
1000-ft: 8.269
1/4-mile: 9.900
1/4-mph: 134.510
On this run, I decided to lift just a hair before I got to the line. It turned out to be a good decision.
After this run, I decided to just go ahead and skip my last Pro ET run. It was way hectic running two classes. If I didn't need the extra runs, I would have only run Super Gas.

I ended up screwing the pooch in the first round of Pro ET, so I won't bother with it. Let's just say, that I was totally asleep at the line with a 0.666 reaction time.

OK, so here are the numbers in the Super Gas Eliminations:
Super Gas Eliminations (Round #1)
Me Other Guy
Reaction: 0.456 0.534
60-ft: 1.556 1.492
330-ft: 4.178 3.987
1/8-mile: 6.345 6.109
1/8-mph: 113.46 114.402
1000-ft: 8.234 7.984
1/4-mile: 8.865 9.691
1/4-mph: 135.703 129.697
This round, I was up against a guy who was all over the place in qualifying. He was on a Busa with wheelie bars. He told me that he normally rund 9.40's. During qualficiations, he was either way too fast or in the 12's. So, I figured he would do the same here. I treed him bad and took off. I went back into my regular mode and forgot to short shift. I remembered right around the thousand foot and got off of it. He blew by me and broke out by a lot.
Super Gas Eliminations (finals)
Me Other Guy
Reaction: 0.462 0.524
60-ft: 1.557 1.497
330-ft: 4.176 4.052
1/8-mile: 6.348 6.245
1/8-mph: 113.171 110.561
1000-ft: 8.235 8.179
1/4-mile: 9.922 9.889
1/4-mph: 128.014 125.259
This one was cool. The guy I raced here is currently #1 in the points, so I knew that I had to be on my game to take him. I treed him too, and remembered to do the 11K shift. We got to the other end, and I had a bike length on him. I figured that Jim would be on his number, so I figured that I would slow it down a bit. I ended up winning by a wheel. Later, Jim told me that he knew that I would be on my number, so he slowed down too hoping I would break out.
What's funny is that after I crossed the line, I didn't have a clue who won. Normally, the timeslips are given out at the shack on the return road. But, at this race, they gave them out at the tower. So, I rode back hoping for the best. I get around to my pit, and Red Collins is there to greet me with a huge smile on his face and a giant high-5. I figured that meant that I won.
I hope you folks did well this weekend too.

Now for some pics....
My little brother just bought a new sticker cutter from eBay. He made me a pair of these stickers because I told him that I had been wanting to do it for a while now.
I finally felt like I was good enough where I didn't have to be anonymous anymore.

When I decided to go with the wheelie bars, I kept wondering what my bike would look like if I decided to go with the swingarm instead. This guy showed up and showed me.

What's funny is that I'm usually the only ZX-12 at these races, so I told an internet buddy to find the guy with the silver ZX-12. He said he felt foolish when he went up to this guy and asked him if he was 'Wannabe.' I felt kinda bad about that....but not that bad....
As for the wheelie bar decision, I'm glad that Red talked me into the bars and slick. I really don't think that I would have progressed as far as I have with the arm.

By the way, one final thing, congradulations go to Red Collins for getting the 'best appearing bike' award for his fresh off the showroom floor Busa.
I hope he let his sons keep that trophy because they did all the work polishing that bike.

Good Job........Wannabe.........
Now thats a run 9.900 on the money. Thats hard to do on a full blown drag bike and you do it on a stock 12 with a bar and slick... You the man...

That smile started from the moment you treed Jim West . . .
I won the Pro Star West Super Gas Championship in 1999,
it's tough to be the racer that everyone is shooting for,
and I let Jim know in the lanes that he is pretty good,
however, Aris has the "EYE OF THE TIGER" & is out to win!
It sure would be nice if there was as many ZX's as Busa's,
even with the small Kawasaki turn - out, Phil won E/T . . .
The rest of you guys need to come out to the World Finals
in Los Angeles, California at www.LACR.net in Palmdale.
And yes I did make sure that my boys got the trophy,
It's not easy getting best appearing bike with NMRA.
I'm sure that my ZX11 could never make it...
But that Busa sure did with the blue double bubble & pipes.
Thanks for coming out & racing with the NMRA . . .
I can only hope that we racers can make it better in 2004.
Let's do what we can to boost these west coast events. . .
See you at the racetrack,
Red, *<(:{)-
